Album Review: “KBCO: STUDIO C VOL. 26” RELEASED ON 12/06!!

On Satrurday morning, Boulder’s own ‘World Class Rock’ station, KBCO 97.3 fm, released the 26th installments of ‘Studio C’. Studio C is the stations intimate live setting, where many artists perform every year on their way through Colorado. These performances are often a little more stripped down than their normal appearances, which is one of the things that make these versions sought after. So, every year the station compiles various tracks from various artists and release it on the first Saturday of December. The pressings are limited and the proceeds go to the Boulder AIDs Project and Food Bank Of The Rockies, which is why droves of people line-up before daylight to get their CDs when they go on sale at 8 a.m. This year had KBCO teaming up with Whole Foods locations for the sale. With unseasonably warm temperatures Saturday morning, the crowds were out at the twenty participating locations with less layers than in years past. With eighteen tracks from artists ranging from Jake Bugg to The Fray, I was anxious to hear what this years compilation had to offer.

The Oh Hellos “Hello My Old Heart”- though this song was overplayed for quite awhile, since it hasn’t been on the air as much lately it is easier to listen to now. I love this more-rootsy feel and the spirited build at the end.

Passenger “Let Her Go”- I maybe liked this song for a second, before it saturated the radio with its mediocre music and generic sound. This version really doesn’t stray from the original, which makes me wonder why waste the space on the CD?

American Authors “Best Day Of My Life”- I will never be convinced that this band ever had any business on KBCO. This is a horrible song, with little to set it apart for other cheesy pop-rock on the radio. It seems like it got its airplay because of its stompy sound that is not very original anymore.

Tedeschi Trucks Band “Midnight In Harlem”- this is when Volume 26 gained my interest. This song is getting a fair amount of play in other avenues, but with Susan Tedeschi’s honest/soulful vocals and Derek Trucks’ timeless playing this one is made for continuous wear and tear.

Iron & Wine “Tree By The River”- kind of has a Wings era Paul McCartney tune, just stripped down enough to work in the singer/songwriter vein.

Jake Bugg “Lightning Bolt”- I really like the Dylan-esque vibe of Jake, but this song has been so abused by radio and commercials that it has become hard to listen too. This version isn’t a far cry from the radio version, so it isn’t a must have.

Ingrid Michaelson “Girls Chase Boys”- I dig her vocal talents. She has a 70’s folk singer gone poppy in the 80’s and though the song is catchy, that is only because it is mostly Top 40, not “World Class Rock”.

David Gray “Back In The World Again”- David sings with conviction and gives himself over to the music. His sound is singer/songwriter if Coldplay was playing behind him. Not my favorite of all of his songs, but I really like this version.

Ed Sheeran “The A Team”- I didn’t like this one from the first time I heard it. Sounds like it could be a hundred other artists trying their hands at the folk singer genre, It is interesting how much time mainstream radio is spending on him, but how I haven’t heard his name on public radio, which is usually the vehicle for good singer/songwriter types.

St. Paul & The Broken Bones “Call Me”- I got a hold of their album, the day it was released, which was a couple months before I heard KBCO talk about them. However, I am impressed that they have gotten, at least, a little airplay by the station and that they are on “Studio C Volume 26”.

The Lumineers “Stubborn Love”- this song is good, despite how it has saturated the airwaves. This rendition, seems as though it could have been played on the streets of downtown Denver, because of its bare bones vibe not the quality.

Paolo Nutini “Let Me Down Easy”- This is a bluesy soul number, that makes me think of Terrence Trent D’arby if he were singing a Robert Cray tune.

The Fray “Break Your Plans”- I know they are Colorado boys, but I am not a huge fan. This song is not overplayed, which makes it much more listenable.

The Head & The Heart “Another Story”- I am fairly fond of their music and dig this song, especially since I’ve never heard it on the radio before.

Big Head Todd & The Monsters “Beautiful World”- one of the more rocking tunes I’ve heard on any volumes of “Studio C”. Not my favorite of all of their tunes, but it still makes for a nice cut for the compilation.

Lana Del Rey “Video Games”- this tune is quite moody and not a tune I care for or can relate to.

Ziggy Marley “I Don’t Wanna Live On Mars”- I am a big fan of Ziggy’s latest release, but this is the most poppy of the tracks on his album. This version is stripped down in the right ways to give it a more rootsy reggae feel.

Conor Oberst “Sausalito”- it has a singer/songwriter quality that meets something more rootsy like Poi Dog Pondering. This is another one that I can’t recall having heard on the radio, so it is more fun to hear, now.

Of the last few years, “KBCO: Studio C Volume 26” is one of the best. I have been collecting these compilations since the eleventh and have heard a few of the other CDs before and I get how treasured this series is. It was another fun, social experience standing with a bunch of other folks, who are obviously music fans, as well. Hope You Were There!! Enjoy!!
