The first week of August will provide us with an eclectic mix of live music to hear along the Front Range. From free concerts to mountain festivals, there is something for everyone on this week’s list. As usual, I have marked the shows I recommend with an * after the venue’s name. Besides this list, check-out the Coming Attractions and Festival Time pages for a more extensive look at what’s happening over the next few months. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

In the last few days, there have been a couple more line-up announcements for the 2016 festival season. Greeley Blues Jam and Telluride Jazz Festival have both posted the highly impressive lists of talent playing at their respective festivals.

The Greeley Blues Jam will be taking place at the Island Grove Arena on Saturday, June 11. The line-up boasts the return of the North Mississippi All Stars to the Blues Jam stage, as well as the premiere of Charlie Musselwhite. The fiery sounds of Tommy Castro & The Pain Killers will also be on hand. English guitarist Davvy Knowles and zydeco showman Chubby Carier are on this impressive line-up. The list of mainstage artists, is rounded out by John Primer with The Delta Sonics. The music starts at 11 a.m. and goes until 10:30 p.m., with bands playing consecutively on two stages inside the arena, so there is never more than a few minutes without music on one of them. Get Your Tickets Now!!!!

The Telluride Jazz Festival will take place at Town Park in the beautiful ski town from August 5th through the 7th. For this years festival, Jon Cleary has been named as the guest of honor. He will appear as the leader of Jon Cleary & The Monster Gentlemen and alongside John Scofield, as a duo. Besides these two acts, the festival will also feature performances by Marcus Miller, Galactic, Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton and Jeff Coffin & The Mu’tet. Also appearing at the 2016 Telluride Jazz Festival are Kermit Ruffins & The BBQ Swingers, Rebirth Brass Band, Caleb Chapman’s Crescent Super Band with Jeff Coffin, Nigel Hall Band, Sobredosis Del Sabor, USAF Academy Band Falconaires, Telluride Student All-Stars Jazz Ensemble, Young Razzcals Jazz Project and more, coming soon!! The tickets are already on sale and are currently $125 for a three day general admission pass, while a three day all access pass in only $175. There are also camping and parking passes available. Single day passes and ‘Jazz After Dark’ tickets are coming soon!!

These are both festivals that have been around for several years, and are tried and true. I have been to several years of the Greeley Blues Jam and have been fortunate to have seen Marcia Ball, The Subdudes, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Pinetop Perkins, John Mayall, JJ Grey & Mofro, Sonny Landreth and more. I have never attended the Telluride Jazz Festival, but I have been to Telluride for another music festival and can attest to the unimaginable beauty that the area has to offer while enjoying incredible music. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

This past weekend, my family and I travelled up to the wonderfully mountainous, Winter Park for the Winter Park Jazz Festival. This festival has been providing jazz fans with fantastic music for over thirty years, but this was our first time for this particular festival. In the last decade, the festival has been relocated from the slopes of the resort area, to Hideaway Park in the town. With both VIP and general admission tickets available, you could try to get as close as right in front of the stage, but thanks to the new jumbo-tron, you could see every act, close-up, no matter where you planted your butt. With headliners Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds and Morris Day & The Time, along with some jazz greats, the crowds were huge for both days.

On Saturday, we missed the opening act She303!, but arrived in time to catch the second act of the day, Marcus Anderson. Marcus is an incredible saxophonist, coupled with an incredible voice and some great backing musicians, it was an impressive set. Some smooth jazz and some funky soul were all in the mix, but when he mentioned that he was had been part of the New Power Generation performing with Prince, everyone took special notice. He even played a song titled “Paisley Red” off of his latest album, which of course was inspired by his time with in the Paisley Neighborhood. After Marcus Anderson’s short set and some tweener DJ music, it was time for the next act. Mindi Abair came on stage looking like a rocker chick from the 80’s and began to play her saxophone like she was the antithesis of Kenny G. As edgy as she started the music softened with something a little bit surf-jazz. She had a rock friendly band whose bassist and guitarist dueled with teases of “Smoke On The Water” and “Purple Haze”, respectively. Mindi labeled the sound of her song”Blue” as “stadium jazz” and it had a huge sound, for sure. They went more southern gospel soul, than jazz, on “Be Beautiful”, and it definitely settled deep in my bones. Mindi did one off of her last album, that she performed in the studio with Keb’ Mo’, called “I’ll Be Your Home”. It had this awesome blues instrumentation with a soulful vocal approach. As she finished with some of her early work, the crowd was pretty well hunkered down in their chairs and were taking shelter under umbrellas, from the light but fairly steady rain. Tower Of Power, came on to less than perfect weather, but sounded tremendous. Songs like the soulful disco of “You Ought To Be Having Fun” and the heavy soul-funk of “Don’t Change Horses (In The Middle Of A Dream)” were crowd favorites. “This Time It’s Real” had folks swaying to the 70’s groove. Tower Of Power pulled out their funk card with “What Is Hip?” to end the set. They left and returned to the stage for an encore full of old-school harmonies on “You’re Still A Young Man”. Next up was, the headliner, Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds, who had women around Hideaway Park smiling in anticipation. Personally, I am not a huge fan of his music, but I do realize how talented he is as an R&B songwriter and musician, and have been a short-term fan of a few of the songs he wrote for other artists. I don’t know much of his music, but I am pretty sure that they played “For The Cool In You” near the beginning of his set. He did snapshots of some of the hits he wrote for Bobby Brown and BoyzIIMen, with songs like “Don’t Be Cruel”, “Tender Roni”, “End Of The Road” and “I’ll Make Love To You”. It was a set that took the audience on a journey through his career, but unfortunately it wasn’t very jazzy and he never took out an acoustic guitar, however no one but me seemed to care about either one of those things. The first day was a soggy success, but at least there was no thunder, so no delays.

On Sunday, the clouds crept in earlier than the day before and it had been forecasted that there was a higher chance of rain for that day. When we got on the shuttle for the festival, there was some light sprinkling, but by the time we got to our seats, the rain had stopped. Though we had missed Dotsero, I was excited to see the day’s second act. Jazz guitarist, Norman Brown took the stage and got his set rocking, before settling into some smooth grooves. His music was definitely rooted in jazz, but was dusted rock and blues. Besides being an incredible guitarist, Norman Brown also has a pretty sweet voice, which he showed-off on “For The Love Of You”. During a soul-jazz number, Norman lead the audience through some fun skat. Brown performed a stellar smooth jazz cover of Janet Jackson’s “That’s The Way Love Goes”. The awesome set ended with some funk when they pulled-off some Parliament Funkadelic. With the weather getting warmer and the skies clearing a little, New Orleans’ own Rebirth Brass Band got up in-front of the huge crowd. They opened with the Fats Domino staple “I’m Walkin”. They covered the Womack’s classic cut, “It’s All Over Now”, which had the crowd getting down. After a couple lively original tunes, Rebirth busted out an instrumental version of Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know”. A stand-out was the energized Rebirth original “Feel Like Funkin’ It Up” . The band ended their fantastic set with a mostly instrumental version of Wilson Pickett’s “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love”. The next set started with Dave Koz and trumpeter, Rick Braun on a smooth jazz rendition of Bill Wither’s “Use Me Up”. Rick and Dave switched-off between their originals on “Get Up & Dance” and “Good Foot”. Kenny Lattimore came on-stage for a serious cover of “Got To Get You Into My Life” by The Beatles. Dave and Rick left the stage and Lattimore performed a couple of  his soulful love songs, which appeared to make many of the women in the audience, smile. With all three artists on-stage together, they did an classic soul cover of  “Take Me To The River” with tremendous horns. Jackie Wilson’s “Higher & Higher” was fabulous, while the set ended with a phenomenal rendition of Friends Of Distinction’s “Grazing In The Grass”. Only the headliner was left and the weather was holding-up perfectly. The Time took to the stage to begin their set, before the incomparable Morris Day followed closely behind for the funky soul of “Cool”, which was an immediate hit with the audience. Between the amazing choreography and the 80’s classics like “Get It Up”, “The Oak Tree”, “Jerk Out” and “777”, Hideaway Park was the place to be on this Sunday afternoon. Things went a little slower and more romantic with “Girl” and the suggestive “If The Kid Can’t Make You Come”, which featured some female audience members being wooed by the guitar player. The ladies remained on-stage for the steady groove of “Ice Cream Castles”. “The Walk” was another fun and funky number, that had the whole place dancing, and went into one of their biggest hits, “The Bird”, to end their phenomenal set. They left the stage and came back on for the get-down of “The Bird”, which was a perfect way to end the weekend on the highest of notes.

I had never been to the Winter Park Jazz Fest, and hadn’t been to Winter Park for almost ten years, so the weekend was a little bit of an adventure. Though the festival is jazz-oriented, it might be better labeled as the soul jazz festival, however despite the semantics, the music was astoundingly awesome. The weather could have been better on Saturday, both in the sky and on the ground, but Sunday was great all the way around. Much thanks to the staff and the other festival-goers around us for the good vibes on Sunday. Not sure we will get back to the Winter Park Jazz Festival, next year, but it will definitely be on the list of possibilities. If you are a fan of jazz or classic soul, then keep an eye out for next year’s line-up in the spring. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!!

These are the shows and festivals for next week. There is a lot of great music in the area as we get closer to the official start of summer. If you look hard enough you can find a bunch of free music, often outdoors. As usual, I have marked the shows and festivals I recommend with an * after the venue name. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!
