The first week of August will provide us with an eclectic mix of live music to hear along the Front Range. From free concerts to mountain festivals, there is something for everyone on this week’s list. As usual, I have marked the shows I recommend with an * after the venue’s name. Besides this list, check-out the Coming Attractions and Festival Time pages for a more extensive look at what’s happening over the next few months. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

HAPPY LISTENING!!!! 😉

Review: BOHEMIAN NIGHTS @ NEW WEST FEST 2015, DAY 3!!

About twenty-four hours ago, Fort Collins closed the books on another Bohemian Nights @ New West Fest. With some big performances both on stage and in the sky, it was quite a memorable day. Though we missed-out on Friday’s and Saturday’s festivities, we were able to attend for most of the day, yesterday.

We started out the day at the Library Stage with the funky Caribbean jazz of the Paa Kow Band. They are a nine-piece with horns and lots of percussion. Paa Kow is the drummer for this impressive world ensemble, whose set was perfect under the morning sun.

We went over to the Linden Stage to catch  The Dendrites. They are a ska/reggae act out of Denver, who I had seen once before and liked enough, to see again. Half of the octet is brass, and helped to build the high-energy set they delivered.

Headed over to Library Stage for a set from Paa Kow Band trumpeter, Brad Goode. Over half of the quintet is also in Paa Kow Band, including Paa Kow on drums. Their sound was refreshingly free, with moments of acid-jazz and smooth jazz, worked-in. They performed an experimental  version of the Paul Anka summer classic, “Sealed With A Kiss”, which was beautiful and off-putting at the same time. These five, have a sound that runs the gamut from Medeski, Martin & Wood to Weather Report.

The Singer/Songwriter Stage hosted guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Rebecca Folsom for an early afternoon set. She opened with the deeply thoughtful “Girls Like Us”, which was followed by the bluesy “Will Of A Woman”. The topic got personal with a folky song about her mother, called “Mama’s House”.

We didn’t really want to leave Rebecca Folsom, but had been waiting for awhile to see Atomga, so we made our way to the Mountain Stage. They had just begun and were already hitting their funky stride, when we walked up. The music was incredible afrobeat , which the ten-piece has made their own, like an Orgone or Rubblebucket. It was near impossible to keep your feet still, so no one tried.

Stuck close to the Mountain Stage, looking forward to local up-and-comers, Pandas & People. Their set began under darkening skies and the threat of a thunderstorm, with folk-rock against some bluegrass instrumentation. The sound was quite compelling and a crowd quickly gathered to hear the Front Range favorites. After a few tunes including “Out To Sea” and “On My Way”, the set was cut short, due to lightning nearby. The rain followed close behind, as everyone took shelter close to the Mountain Avenue. As the rain let up, but the thunder continued, the crowd dispersed even more. A little after four o’clock, Bohemian Nights announced via social media, that the music would start again at 4:40 p.m.

By the time I got back to the Mountain Stage, the crowd was already growing to impending capacity, more than a half-an-hour before Rodrigo y Gabriela were set to perform. Rodrigo came on-stage playing a guitar, followed closely by Gabriela. It was immediately obvious that the duo were playing alone, in Fort Collins, which added to the pressure to play constantly and to play well. They easily did both. It was amazing the way that Gabriela’s strumming hand rotated back and fourth with her thumb and pinky out, defeating the speed of light every time. Both guitarists are well versed in the sounds that can be made with the strings, but they also get the percussive qualities of the guitar’s body as well. Gabriela stayed on stage, solo, for a few minutes, and astounded the amassed congregation. Rodrigo returned and called for about twenty  people to come on stage, but ended up with closer to forty. They stayed on stage for a few songs and got to dance and witness the duo’s interplay, close-up. After the fans left the stage, so did Gabriela, leaving Rodrigo all alone. He played a couple of instrumentals, including a phenomenal cover of Rage Against The Machines’ “Killing In The Name Of” that is some of the hardest acoustic music, ever. The end for us came when Rodrigo took to the microphone to sing a song. We didn’t know he sang, but his voice wasn’t bad. The problem, was with the lyrics, that were just generic heartbreak lines, which have all been used a billion times before. It seemed to take something incredibly original, like their playing style, interplay, eclectic sound and speed, and turned it into a mediocre moment. We left at that point, having been impressed, but having gotten our fill of everything the festival had to offer.

Having missed the first two days of Bohemian Nights @ New West Fest, I can’t really comment on either of them. Word has it, that the Mountain Stage was at capacity about forty-five minutes before Steve Miller Band took the stage, on Saturday night. Sunday’s performances seemed pretty well attended, even with the rain delay to end the festival. Rodrigo y Gabriela were astonishingly tight and captivating, for an extremely large crowd on Mountain Avenue. Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats were on the Library Park Stage, and being that they were pretty fresh-off of a performance on Jimmy Falon, they also had a huge audience. The festival was, as it always is, a highly-eclectic sampling of Colorado’s finest musicians, that draws people from many miles away. We can safely attest to the idea that our community is lucky to have Bohemian Nights to provide such great music for our city. We also recognize that the event is getting too big for the area in which it is held, without some changes being made. That said, we, like so many Fort Collins’ residents always look forward to seeing the line-up for Bohemian Nights @ New West Fest , no matter how much we dread, the parking and the crowds. Looking forward to next year. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!!

Recommendations: BOHEMIAN NIGHTS @ NEW WEST FEST 2015!!!!

Next weekend is Fort Collins premiere event in the downtown area. New West Fest is a long running annual celebration of this Northern Colorado community. Over the last several years, this festival has come to include Bohemian Nights, which is a showcase of many of Colorado’s finest musical acts, as well as internationally renowned headliners, happening on multiple stages, over the three day festival. Bohemian Nights have hosted acts, like Melissa Etheridge, Earth Wind & Fire, Taj Mahal, Los Lobos, Earl Scruggs, Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers and Michael Franti & Spearhead, to name just a few. Some of the biggest names on the Colorado music scene have also graced Bohemian Night stages, including The Motet, The Subdudes, Elephant Revival, Emmitt-Nershi Band, Richie Furay, Devotchka, Cracker, The Samples and Big Head Todd & The Monsters, as well as so many more. This year there is one less stage than most years, due to old town construction, but it doesn’t change the fact that three days and multiple stages, can provide a lot of music to wade through. I have been able to sample almost all of the acts that are playing at this year’s Bohemian Nights @ New West Fest, and am going to offer my suggestions to help to simplify the decision making process.

Besides all of this music, there is also a Kid’s Music Adventure Stage for the younger audiences, and late night shows around town for the adult attendees. We will be posting daily reviews, each day during the festival, so check back next Saturday, Sunday and Monday, to see if you had the same experiences that we do. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

Usually these bands would be spread-out between five stages, but due to the eye-sore that is now the Old Town Stage, we will be down one stage this year. This festival is focused on vendors, carnival attractions and of course, the music. There is also a Kids Zone for all the little ones in your crew. The headliners for Friday and Sunday will be announced next Monday. We will have to wait until late July for Saturday night’s headlining act. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!!
