The first week of August will provide us with an eclectic mix of live music to hear along the Front Range. From free concerts to mountain festivals, there is something for everyone on this week’s list. As usual, I have marked the shows I recommend with an * after the venue’s name. Besides this list, check-out the Coming Attractions and Festival Time pages for a more extensive look at what’s happening over the next few months. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

At opposite ends of our state, the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival and Riot Fest Denver, both announced the talent for their respective festivals, earlier today. Though both of these festivals will be taking place in September, that is pretty much where the similarities end.

The Telluride Blues & Brews Festival takes place in the picturesque southern mountain ski town of Telluride, where every view is breathtaking. This festival has been around for over two decades and can boast past performers, such as B.B. King, James Brown, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Gov’t Mule, Robert Cray Band and tons more. Though the acts are primarily, though sometimes loosely, associated with blues music, there have been some artists that push that envelope a bit, like The B-52’s, Moe., Lou Reed and Zappa Plays Zappa. Despite being in an awe-inspiring setting, this fest is in the middle of September, which can be wet and cold in the mountains, so plan accordingly. This year has a mix of veteran and newer acts, along with those that fit easily into a blues envelope, and those that skirt such classification. The headliners for this year’s Telluride Blues & Brews Festival, are Joe Walsh, Gary Clark Jr., The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band and Jason Isbell. The rest of this year’s line-up includes Anders Osborne, Shakey Graves, Vintage Trouble, North Mississippi Allstars, Shovels & Rope, N.M.O. (North Mississippi Allstars & Anders Osborne), Madisen Ward & The Mama Bear, Jamestown Revival, Little Freddie King, Samantha Fish, Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers, The California Honeydrops, Tyree Morris & Hearts Of Worship, Moreland & Arbuckle, Israel Nash, Con Brio, Jonathon Boogie Long, Colin Lake, Mitch Woods, Reverend Deadeye, A.J. Fullerton, The Rusty Wright Band, The Delgado Brothers, Troy Walker + Sam Tallent. The Telluride Blues & Brews Festival  will take place from Friday, September 16 to Sunday, September 18, with aDanny Brown free concert on Thursday night, in the Mountain Village. Three day tickets are going for $199, with camping and late night tickets also available at www.tellurideblues.com.

On the other hand, the 2016 installment of the Riot Fest is closer to home, in less scenic surroundings. The punk, metal, alternative music festival started a few years ago in Byers and then moved to the Pepsi Center parking lot in 2014. For last year’s Riot Fest, the National Western Complex became the events new home, and it will be in that spot, this year. Over the last three years, the festival has hosted Iggy & The Stooges, Weezer, Modest Mouse, The Replacements, System Of A Down, Public Enemy, The Pixies and many more. This year is going to be another big one for The Riot Fest, when the original line-up for The Misfits reunites, besides performances from Ween, Death Cab For Cutie, Jane’s Addiction playing “Ritual De Lo Habitual”, Sleater-Kinney, NAS, Deftones, Fitz & The Tantrums, Descendents, NOFX, Underoath, Bad Religion, Thursday, Tyler The Creator, Pepper, Jake Bugg, Motion City Soundtrack, Wolf Parade, The Hold Steady, Yo La Tengo, Sleigh Bells, Chevy Metal, The Dandy Warhols, Vince Staples, Suicidal Tendencies, Flatbush Zombies, Hatebreed, Lagwagon, The Aquabats, Glassjaw, The Wonder Years, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, Danny Brown , Against Me!, Meat Puppets, Leftover Crack, Dan Deacon, Murder By Death, Rogue Wave, Converge, Billy Talent, Fucked Up, Lewis Del Mar, Set Your Goals, Juliette Lewis & The Licks, Touche Amore, Frnkiero & The Cellabration, Pouya, White Lung, Plague Vendor, People Under The Stairs, Fat Nick & Don Krez, Violent Soho, Judith Hill, Tigers Jaw, Bleached, Diarrhea Planet, Planes Mistaken For Stars, Dee-1, Kirk Knight, Somos, Turnover, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas, Bryce Vine, 3Teeth, Night Riots, Syd Arthur, Holy White Hounds, Jule Vera, Microwave, Death Spills, Diet Cig, Donna Missal, High Waisted, Culture Abuse and more to be announced for this three day throw-down. Riot Fest 2016 will take place over Labor Day weekend, September 2-4, you can get your tickets now, at riotfest.org.

Now that both of these festivals have revealed their 2016 line-ups, all that is left is to get lodging and tickets. I have been to Telluride Blues & Brews festival, once, and it was a blast, but I was told the weather was better than usual when I was there in 2012. I haven’t been to Riot Fest, but I have a friend who has been all three years and said that the first year was the best, but that there are always bands that she wants to see. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

In the last few days, there have been a couple more line-up announcements for the 2016 festival season. Greeley Blues Jam and Telluride Jazz Festival have both posted the highly impressive lists of talent playing at their respective festivals.

The Greeley Blues Jam will be taking place at the Island Grove Arena on Saturday, June 11. The line-up boasts the return of the North Mississippi All Stars to the Blues Jam stage, as well as the premiere of Charlie Musselwhite. The fiery sounds of Tommy Castro & The Pain Killers will also be on hand. English guitarist Davvy Knowles and zydeco showman Chubby Carier are on this impressive line-up. The list of mainstage artists, is rounded out by John Primer with The Delta Sonics. The music starts at 11 a.m. and goes until 10:30 p.m., with bands playing consecutively on two stages inside the arena, so there is never more than a few minutes without music on one of them. Get Your Tickets Now!!!!

The Telluride Jazz Festival will take place at Town Park in the beautiful ski town from August 5th through the 7th. For this years festival, Jon Cleary has been named as the guest of honor. He will appear as the leader of Jon Cleary & The Monster Gentlemen and alongside John Scofield, as a duo. Besides these two acts, the festival will also feature performances by Marcus Miller, Galactic, Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton and Jeff Coffin & The Mu’tet. Also appearing at the 2016 Telluride Jazz Festival are Kermit Ruffins & The BBQ Swingers, Rebirth Brass Band, Caleb Chapman’s Crescent Super Band with Jeff Coffin, Nigel Hall Band, Sobredosis Del Sabor, USAF Academy Band Falconaires, Telluride Student All-Stars Jazz Ensemble, Young Razzcals Jazz Project and more, coming soon!! The tickets are already on sale and are currently $125 for a three day general admission pass, while a three day all access pass in only $175. There are also camping and parking passes available. Single day passes and ‘Jazz After Dark’ tickets are coming soon!!

These are both festivals that have been around for several years, and are tried and true. I have been to several years of the Greeley Blues Jam and have been fortunate to have seen Marcia Ball, The Subdudes, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Pinetop Perkins, John Mayall, JJ Grey & Mofro, Sonny Landreth and more. I have never attended the Telluride Jazz Festival, but I have been to Telluride for another music festival and can attest to the unimaginable beauty that the area has to offer while enjoying incredible music. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

This is the list of shows coming to the Front Range, next week. There is some incredible live music to hear, coming from national and local acts for the first full week of April. As usual, I have marked the shows I recommend with an * after the venue name. Besides next week’s shows, the Coming Attractions page, has many recommendations for the coming months, including outdoor venues like the Mishawaka Amphitheatre, Fiddler’s Green and Red Rocks, to name a few. For festivals along the Front Range and beyond, check out the Festival Time page. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!
