New Releases 4/01: ANDREW BIRD, CHARLES BRADLEY, WEEZER & More…

Though last week’s list of new releases was pretty stacked, I had no idea how jam packed the list for the first day of April, would be. With the latest from Andrew Bird, Charles Bradley, Weezer, Marco Benevento, Explosions In The Sky, Greyhounds, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Elephant Revival, Mogwai and Pet Shop Boys, there is certainly no shortage of quality possibilities for this weeks review. On top of these, there is also the music of Miles Davis on the original motion picture soundtrack for “Miles Ahead” and a release from the archives of the Allman Brothers Band circa 1971, “Live From A&R Studios”.

  • Allman Brothers Band- “Live From A&R Studios”
  • Andrew Bird- “Are You Serious”
  • Bleached- “Welcome The Worms”
  • Bombino- “Azel”
  • Charles Bradley- “Changes”
  • Elephant Revival- “Petals”
  • Explosions In The Sky- “The Wilderness”
  • Greyhounds- “Change Of Pace”
  • Hiromi- “Spark”
  • Marco Benevento- “The Story Of Fred Short”
  • Miles Davis- “Miles Ahead” (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
  • Mogwai- “Atomic”
  • Pet Shop Boys- “Super”
  • Pigeons Playing Ping Pong- “Pleasure”
  • Robbie Fulks- “Upland Stories”
  • Skydyed- “A Quantum Dream”
  • The Last Shadow Puppets- “Everything You’ve Come To Expect”
  • Three Trapped Tigers- “Silent Earthling”
  • Trapper Schoepp- “Rangers & Valentines”
  • Weezer- “Weezer (White Album)”

Okay, so there it is, what may be the best list of new releases I have ever posted. As usual, I will pick one of these albums for review, which I will post on Saturday. Check back then, to see which album I chose and to read the review. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

Review: JOE RUSSO’S ALMOST DEAD, SELLS-OUT BOULDER!!!!

Last Night was the first show performed by Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, west of the Mississippi. For anyone who doesn’t know about Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, don’t worry it is a fairly new act that hasn’t played many shows. How lucky for Grateful Dead fans that during the year that Furthur has taken off, that their drummer has decided to continue the legacy of the music that began almost fifty years ago. Joe Russo along with Duo and Bustle In Your Hedgerow pianist/organist Marco Benevento, Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz and guitarist and vocalist Scott Metzger, from Rana, Soulive, Particle, Stanton Moore Trio and more, re-interpret the Grateful Dead cannon.  The quintet is rounded out  by Tom Hamilton, singer, songwriter and guitarist with Brothers Past and American Babies, as well as recently having played a few shows with Phil Lesh and being given the nod by Bill Kreutzman for his new band Billy & The Kids. These five had mostly played sporatically around the Northeast before the two shows in Chicago, last month, but they have gotten rave reviews. On my way into the Boulder Theatre around 8:20 p.m., there was a large crowd in front of the theatre with several fingers pointed for the sky, since the show had sold out in the afternoon.

The show began promptly at 9:30 with the band doing their first ever version of “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)” with Tom Hamilton singing and the entire band on fire for the first of what would become several premieres throught the night, including the second number, “Crazy Fingers”. They got into a fast jam that became an intense version of “Mr. Charlie” that heard Scott Metzger delivering convincing vocals.  Then they premiered “He’s Gone” with emphasis on the right lyrical cues, which was followed by a nice psychedelic jam which included teases of both “Slipknot!” and “The Eleven”, to build some serious anticpation before heading into another first with an amazing version of “Loser” with Marco on a baby grand. Marco remained on piano for a solo, which found its way into their first-time version of “Sugaree”. The first set ended with one of the best renditions I’ve ever heard of “Viola Lee Blues” by anyone, with Hamilton, Metzger and Russo handling the harmonies like champs.

The second set started pretty abruptly with the ominously fun “Alligator”, which turned into a beautiful “Eyes Of The World” that resonated wonderfully with the crowd.  After a huge jam that teased “The Wheel”, the band busted out the premiere of the huge instrumental “King Solomon’s Marbles”, which got pretty tripped-out in the middle. Some serious space followed and sent them into another first with the first verse of “Dark Star”. The crowd was worked into a frenzy with the vintage pairing of “Scarlet Begonias” and “Fire On The Mountain” with Benevento tearing up the keys on piano. After slowing the pace and teasing “Stella Blue”, the band finished “Fire On The Mountain” and the set.  After a few minutes off stage, the band came back for the melodic sing-along “Ripple”, which left the audience floating out of the theatre.

I can’t say enough good things about this group of musicians and the way they are playing these classic tunes. As someone who has seen and listened to The Grateful Dead and most of their side-projects over the last twenty years, as well as about a dozen Dead cover bands, I’d like to think I know the music very well. Much like The Dead breathed new life into the music back in 2003 and 2004, and how Furthur did the same in 2010, this group is taking the music in a fresh direction, which keeps the crowd dancing during each tune and on the edge with anticipation for the next. The teases were fabulous and really drove the excitement. Tom and Scott were both fantastic on vocals and guitar with very even abilities. The magic that occurs between Joe Russo and Marco Benevento is almost indescribable, except to say its breathtaking and smile-inspiring. I know this is a newer project and that most of these musicians have other things going on, but hopefully they will do some longer touring over the next little while, or at least until Furthur hits the road again. If you love the Grateful Dead, then don’t hesitate to get tickets for Joe Russo’s Almost Dead if they come around again. They are playing tonight at the Ogden Theatre, but it may be sold out by now. Hope You Were There, Last Night!!

Besides these up-coming concerts, also check out my lists of festivals and Red Rocks shows for the summer. Get out and hear some of the sounds of summer that are playing all over this year!! Enjoy!!
