Album Review: LYRICS BORN PUTS OUT REAL GOOD MUSIC ON “REAL PEOPLE”

It truly was a difficult decision, when it came to this week’s new album releases. With releases from My Morning Jacket, The Word, Shelby Lynne, Mandolin Orange  and Lyrics Born, I thought the decision was hard enough until I took a listen to a few other artists. Through these samples, I discovered some other distinct possibilities and ended up with four albums, from Chris Stapleton, Lyrics Born, Ivan & Alyosha and The Word. It came down to The Word and Lyrics Born, so I asked my wife who was down with The Word, until she heard Lyrics Born was in the mix. After sampling both, she leaned toward Lyrics Born and “Real People”. Lyrics born is an incredible rapper from California, who has been making his brand of conscious hip-hop since 1992. He performed on Galactic’s “From The Corner To The Block” and is one-half of Latyrx, along with Lateef The Truthspeaker.

The title track, begins with a classic soul beat and then goes early 90’s. It is truly conscious hip-hop and tells the story of a young Japanese- American boy, through some intelligent lyrics and an impeccable flow.

“Chest Wide Open” has a great old soul sound with some nice vocals by David Shaw. There is nothing classic soul about the tales of a cheater, who will do it right in front of you.

There is a super-fast rockin’ beat and lyrical flow on “$ir Racha”. This one has some nice percussion and brass, which helps to fill all spaces.

“All Hail The Queen (Ma Belle Reine)” features Ivan Neville lending a hand on this French Quarter funker.

Lyrics Born adds more guests in the form of Galactic on the cajun rap-rock of “Rock-Rock-Away”. The harmonica takes this one to a very funky bayou.

“Holy Matrimony” is a marriage nightmare, but an entertaining cut about marrying a girl and her mother moves in after the wedding. Yikes!!

Ivan Neville returns for the soul-jazz sounds of “Around The Bend”, which is a killer love song with lyrics that some of us can certainly relate to.

Another good song about a bad situation is “Good Riddance”. A nod to the loyalty that doesn’t exist for many in the music business, especially record labels.

“WTF?” welcomes back Galactic for a reflective look at how we have gotten ourselves into the mess we are in, as a nation and as the human race.

Cory Henry joins the fray for “Mr. Dilligaf”, about someone no one really wants to be around.

One of my favorites on the album is “Confidence” about how stuff can be spread around and blown up to epic proportionns by one pair of loose lips. The lyrics are entertaining and clever, with some great beats behind.

There are two remixes and one is for “That’s It” with the assistance Preservation Hall Jazz Band. This is an organic number with a whirlwind of horns flying at ya from every direction. The duel that Lyrics born has with one of the horns is awesome.

Corey Glover  (Living Colour) sings on “2nd Act (Phoenix Rising)” and Trombone Shorty lends, will you know. Lyrics Born offers the start over that so many are looking for. There is definitely some flavor from the Crescent City on this track.

Initially, I liked Lyrics Born’s latest release “Real People” , but my second listen didn’t thrill as much, but the third would determine my impression of this album. I really liked it and continue to be impressed with Lyrics Born, not only for his delivery, but the content of his music. It isn’t off-putting because it is conscious, because Lyrics Born isn’t totally clean, but it isn’t about bangin’ either, it is just about life. I can’t see how anyone who likes hip-hop, wouldn’t at least appreciate the talent that made “Real People”. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

HAPPY LISTENING!!!! 😉

Despite a shorter list, there are some tremendous acts playing over the last full week of September. As Usual, I have marked the shows I recommend with an * after the venue name. I also now have a page for ‘Coming Attractions’, which is a list of concerts coming to the Front Range during the next several months, that I recommend or am just plain excited about. Get out and check-out some of the great music there is to hear, now and down the road!! That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!
