The live music to hear along the Front Range, next week, does not make up a very long list, but there are still some amazing musicians playing in the area. With national touring acts like Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, Victor Wooten and Reverend Horton Heat playing in our state, there  is also plenty of Colorado talent, that will be performing around, including Hazel Miller, New Family Dog, Harmonious Junk and many more. I have marked the shows I recommend with an * after the venue name.  For a more comprehensive list of shows coming to the area in the next few months, check-out the Coming Attractions Page. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

HAPPY LISTENING!!!! 😉

Review: BILLY & THE KIDS WERE SMOKIN’ IN DENVER ON 4/20!!

The 4/20 weekend, came to a close for many at the Ogden Theatre, where Billy & The Kids were slated to perform. The band, consisting of Bill Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead), Tom Hamilton (Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, American Babies), Aron Magner (The Disco Biscuits) and Reed Mathis (Tea Leaf Green, 7 Walkers) had themed the show as ‘Spring 1990 Revisited’. Performing a show full of the sounds that the Grateful Dead pulled-off twenty years ago, required the additional services of Jason Hann (The String Cheese Incident) on drums and Dominic Lalli (Big Gigantic, The Motet) on saxophone, to resemble the sit-ins with Branford Marsalis. Billy & The Kids have barely been together for six months, but have proven to have a huge draw, especially during the 50th Anniversary of The Grateful Dead.

After getting past the highly ambitious security forces, the Ogden was starting to fill quickly and by 9 p.m., it seemed to be close to selling out. The band started their set with “Let The Good Times Roll”, that saw Aron Magner passionately attempting to channel Brent Mydland on vocals. Reed Mathis took vocal duties on “Estimated Prophet”, which connected to “Eyes Of The World” via a trippy jam. After a big bass jam, Tom Hamilton took over vocals on “Scarlet Begonias”, which seemed to go in a very Disco Biscuits direction. The one thing that was easily noticable, was that Dominic Lalli seemed lost as to when to play, which to many Deadheads was a sign of how little he knew the music, that he was getting paid to play. After some sweet drumming and a spacey mess, the band moved into “Bird Song” with its own upbeat jam. Aron took over for some pretty impressive vocals on “Let It Grow”, which had more of a Spanish feel, than usual. The first set ended with a very short but energetic “Women Are Smarter”.

About a half-hour later, the boys came back to the stage for “Gimme Some Lovin” to open the second set, with Aron again really wailing like Brent Mydland did twenty years ago. This sequed into a gigantic “Shakedown Street” complete with a massive jam into “The Wheel”. After another psychedelic foray, everyone left the stage, except Bill and Jason, who remained to give the crowd a percussive treat. The rest of the guys emerged for a vague jam, before Tom Hamilton sang a stand-out version of “Standing On The Moon”, followed by the grooviest “Foolish Heart” I had ever heard. “Feel Like A Stranger” began with a mysterious intro and ended the set. The band remained on stage, amid heavy applause and performed an extremely enjoyable “Quinn The Eskimo”. The band said goodnight and left the stage, but the audience continued to cheer, so they returned for a quick second encore of “Big Railroad Blues”.

Billy & The Kids performed two scorching sets of Grateful Dead music indicative of their Spring 1990 Tour. Despite some moments of confusion for Dominic Lalli during the first set, he really seemed to relax and go with the flow more during the second set, and it was highly audible. I talked to other audience members, who dug the show overall, despite feelings that the guys had moments of sounding too much like the Disco Biscuits. I must add, how powerful it was to watch Jason Hann’s face during the entire show, because he looked like a kid in a candy store, with a smile permanently plastered on his face. Personally, I enjoyed the second set more than the first and “Standing On The Moon” and “Foolish Heart” were big reasons why. Because of different guests and themes for Billy & The Kids shows, I can’t recommend enough to catch, as many as you can. My suggestion to all future guests of Billy & The Kids, do your homework and be very comfortable in the material, because you can’t fool Deadheads, with the music they love. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Hope You Were There!!

Set I: Let The Good Times Roll, Estimated Prophet > Eyes Of The World > Scarlet Begonias > Bird Song, Let It Grow, Women Are Smarter

Set II: Gimme Some Lovin, Shakedown Street > The Wheel > Drumz > Standing On The Moon, Foolish Heart > Feel Like A Stranger

Encore 1: Quinn The Eskimo

Encore 2: Big Railroad Blues

BILLY & THE KIDS PLAYING 1990 GRATEFUL DEAD IN DENVER ON 4/20!!

A couple of months ago, I wrote a post about an upcoming Billy & The Kids show in Denver. Well, that show is on Monday, 4/20. Grateful Dead drummer, Bill Kreutzmann started this project less than a year ago and their first show was at Warren Haynes’ “X-Mas Jam” in December. The next show they announced was the 4/20 show at the Ogden Theatre in Denver. The band has played a handful of shows since then and are scheduled for some more over the summer.

Billy & The Kids consists of Bill Kreutzmann, Aron Magner (The Disco Biscuits), Tom Hamilton (Joe Russo’s Almost Dead + American Babies) and Reed Mathis (Tea Leaf Green + 7 Walkers). When the Denver show was first announced, there wasn’t a theme, but since that time more information has been released. Bill wanted to recapture a little of the sound that the Grateful Dead had going on 25 years ago, in 1990. To do this he enlisted the saxophone wizardry of Dominic Lalli (Big Gigantic), which helps to bring the feel of the shows when Branford Marsalis sat in with the Grateful Dead. Kreutzmann also felt the desire to make something similar in sound on the percussive side of things. The best way to make the drums sound like two people are playing, is to have two people play. For that job, he has put Jason Hann (The String Cheese Incident) in his co-pilot seat.

Bill and, fellow Grateful Dead drummer, Mickey Hart sat in with the Disco Biscuits, last night at Red Rocks. They came out for the second of three sets, that was dedicated entirely to the music of the Grateful Dead. Tom Hamilton also joined the band on guitar for this portion of the cold and snowy night at the beloved venue. This was just another example of the tributes that are being done in honor of The Good Ol’ Grateful Dead and the 50th anniversary of when this jam scene of ours truly began.

Monday night at the Ogden, with Billy & The Kids will be another way to celebrate the timeless music of the Grateful Dead. After all, it is 4/20, and with such a storied history between Deadheads and the marijuana culture, it is an added reason to get festive in a place where you can. The show will probably sell-out, but currently there are still tickets available, so pick yours up now. In case you aren’t sold on Billy & The Kids, check-out this clip of them performing Phish’s “Chalkdust Torture” here. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

HAPPY LISTENING!!!! 😉

Review: ELECTRON DRAWS A LARGE CROWD IN FORT COLLINS!!

Last night was the first of a four-night Colorado run for Philly’s super-jamband, Electron. The band consists of bassist/vocalist, Marc Brownstein of The Disco Biscuits, alongside fellow Biscuit and keyboardist, Aron Magner. Tom Hamilton is the guitarist/singer and the other original member, and aside from being in Brothers Past back then, he has since been playing and touring with American Babies and Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. In that time, Joe Russo and DJ left the line-up and Mike Greenfield has taken over drumming duties. The first show of this mini-tour was at the Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins.

When I arrived around 10 p.m. and could hear some pretty sweet jamming drifting out the door. By the time I got inside, I had figured out that The Magic Beans were on stage and despite a few songs I had seem them play a couple of years ago, they seemed much more like a jamband than the jamgrass I remembered. There was already a pretty fair crowd of at least 200 people, when I arrived. I must admit that once I started talking, The Magic Beans became background music, but good background music, at that.

Electron went on around 11, and opened with the Grateful Dead meets jamtronica sound of “M.E.M.P.H.I.S.”. They played an epic version of “Little Lai” and the jamtronic “Therapy” with the funky livetronica of “Confrontation” woven throughout. Hamilton and Brownstein traded-off vocals, but aside from some fleeting moments when the other members got to shine, it was mostly the Tom Hamilton guitar clinic. To emphasize the importance of Hamilton, the group went back into the Brothers Past catalog and pulled-out the superb jamtronica of “Simple Gift Of Man”. Tom remained on lead vocals for a twist on the Pink Floyd classic “Fearless”. The livetronic Led Zeppelin sound of “Triumph” is a superb blend of the two, and finished w/ a “Little Lai” reprise. The set ended with a pretty kick-ass version of Tom singing “Soul Is Shaking”. The band barely walked off stage, before turning around to perform the sweet jamming “Naeba”.

This was a crowded show for a Wednesday night during winter break at the college. While there were quite a few people at the show, who were huge Disco Biscuits’ fans, I was there more because of how impressed I have been with Tom Hamilton’s voice and phenomenal guitar playing. From my experience, many people were suprisingly blown-away by Hamilton’s playing and were asking about him. The next couple of nights will have the band playing two sets with The Magic Beans opening each show. If you are a Disco Biscuits’ fan or just love the sound of amazing guitar playing, then go see Electron, while you can. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

TOM HAMILTON BRINGS AMERICAN BABIES BACK TO COLORADO, THIS WEEK!!!!

There is always talk about the hardest working person in show business, and for a long time, it seemed like Warren Haynes held the title, but there is a new man in that line. Tom Hamilton is a singer/songwriter/guitarist, who used to front the millenial jam band, Brothers Past.

Over recent years, Tom has been leading a more Americana-directed band, appropriately called American Babies. About a year ago, the band added former Slip bassist, Marc Friedman to the mix. Marc is one of my favorite bassists and I was delighted to get to see the band for the first time, this past March in Fort Collins. I was quite impressed with the mix of covers, rootsy originals and even a rendition of a Brothers Past tune. Though there were only about 20 people at the Sunday night show, Tom was very humble and grateful for the folks, who showed up.

Tom played at the LoHi Music Festival in Denver, in mid-June. He played with Blake Mobley’s Tiger Party along-side Garrett Sayers (The Motet), Mike Greenfield (Lotus), and David Murphy (STS9). He also played with members of The Motet, Moe. and more, as an incarnation of Everyone Orchestra for LoHi late night. He played and did a short tour with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, which included Marco Benevento, Scott Metzger, David Dreiwitz and Joe Russo. By the way, all of these projects were awesome, but Joe Russo’s Almost Dead at the Boulder Theatre was phenomenal.

Tom is part of Grateful Dead drummer,  Bill Kreutzman’s latest project, Billy & The Kids. Tom is also playing with Phil Lesh & Friends for New Year’s Eve, along with other members of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. Besides all of that, a handful of shows have just been announced for Electron, which besides Hamilton, includes Marc Brownstein (Disco Biscuits), Aron Magner (Disco Biscuits) and Mike Greenfield (Lotus). This super-group is bringing their tour through Colorado in January, with shows in Fort Collins, Boulder and Denver.

If that doesn’t sound like enough for a single person to do in a year, Tom is back on tour for the beginning of December. American Babies are on the road, right now. They start their four show Colorado stop in Aspen tonight, teaming up with Ghost Owl, which features members of Perpetual Groove. Tomorrow night, they are playing at the Lazy Dog in Boulder. They will be in Denver at The 1Up on Friday, December 5th and at the Little Bear in Evergreen on the 6th.

Tom shows his skill as a musician everytime he takes the stage, but the American Babies are a different animal. This is a vehicle for Tom’s songwriting, which allows him to take the wheel more than many of the other acts, he is playing with these days. No matter who Tom Hamilton is playing with, I would highly suggest checking them out. On a personal note, it is really cool to see  how much Hamilton’s talents have been recognized by his peers over the last year. It is only a matter of time before his name is common-place among all facets of the jam scene.  Check-out these video links for Tom Hamilton. Enjoy!!
