Review: LEFTOVER SALMON AND BOBBY LEE RODGERS DROP JAWS AT THE AGGIE!!

Last night, was the first of a two night stand for Leftover Salmon at the Aggie, with guest musician, Bobby Lee Rodgers. Leftover Salmon has deep roots in Colorado, so their ‘poly-ethnic Cajun slamgrass’ is deeply loved in the Rocky Mountain State. Bobby Lee Rodgers is an incredible musician, whose talents are too numerous to list, but he was one of the youngest professors that has ever taught at the Berklee College Of Music in Boston. Along with Col. Bruce Hampton, they co-founded The Codetalkers in the late 90’s, and the band continued, often without Hampton for health reasons, for ten years. Bobby Lee can play multiple instruments and though I love Leftover Salmon, the addition of Rodgers is why I had to see this show.

I arrived around ten and the Aggie was getting crowded, but with some room to move. Gipsy Moon, which feature Silas Herman, the son of Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman, had already played their opening set, so the air was thick with anticipation. The guys came out and started with the motivational love song, “Liza”, which included the first of many Bobby Lee Rodgers’ stellar guitar solos. Drew took the lead on “Western Skies”, followed by Vince borrowing from his days with Great American Taxi for the backwoods fun of “Lumpy Bean Poles & Dirt”. Drew picked up his electric for a couple of Americana tunes and he tore it up, in usual form. Banjoist extraordinaire, Andy Thorn grabbed hold of the vocals on his own “Light Behind The Rain”, which featured some incredible jamming. One of the stand-outs of the night, “Aquatic Hitchhiker” was tremendous with some huge improvisations, including a monster drum solo, before returning to the layers of melody. The band went way back in time for a rocking “Head Bag” to end the first set.

The second set began with Vince on vocals for a funky version of the classic tune, “Reuben’s Train”, before Drew took the reigns over, as the song moved through its bluegrass roots, into a drum solo and an electric guitar duel. Bobby Lee stepped to the microphone for one of his tunes about the loss of the radio, as it used to be. One of the high points of the night, was when Bobby Lee was taking an extended solo and Vince was playing while laughing at just how good this guy really is. Vince lead the group through the conservation minded “Ask The Fish”, which became a vehicle for ultimate improvisation, with Drew on fiddle and Vince rephrasing “Gin & Juice”, while sampling from the Talking Heads “Once In A Lifetime”. Bobby Lee stepped up again for his tune “Outer Space”, which is a little more of a jazz number, but Vince kept things grounded with some washboard and eventually borrowed from Sun Ra with “Space Is The Place”. Things got pretty ‘out there’, for a bit, but were eventually reeled in. To end the show, the last two numbers included a guest spot from Vince’s son, Silas, who had played as part of the opener. Silas is a skilled and speedy mandolin player and this showed, as the band finished-out the night with “All Night Ride”.

What an amazing show!! I had three drinks spilled on me over the course of about three hours and I still had a grin plastered on my face for most of the show, especially when Bobby Lee got cookin’. Bobby Lee implores a guitar tone that is tucked neatly between blues rock monster Warren Haynes and the jazzy funk of John Scofield.  It certainly didn’t hurt from an enjoyment point of view, that there was a meeting of the mutual admiration society on stage, with everyone seeming to be thoroughly impressed by everyone else’s efforts. I have seen Leftover Salmon many times and find that they are often at their best when they have to move out of the box, which shows the vastness of their skills. It is also saying something, that the band was halfway through the first set before I realized that they didn’t have anyone on keys. That isn’t saying anything about Bill Payne’s playing, because I love his additions, but more to say that I was just so caught up in what this group of musicians was bringing, that I couldn’t miss what wasn’t there. I would highly recommend checking out tonight’s show at the Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins, if you like your bluegrass with lots of extras. This is the only other show scheduled with Bobby Lee Rodgers, so get your tix now. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

HAPPY LISTENING!!!! 😉

Review: OPENING DAY NED FEST 2015!!

The annual three day celebration up in beautiful Nederland, Colorado, referred to as Ned Fest, started Friday. This family friendly mountain festival began in the late 90’s and has evolved from a two-day festival to a three day, that typically happens the weekend before Labor Day weekend. This year the folks at Ned Fest, added something new to their offerings, VIP passes. My wife and I are eight year veterans of this awesome and intimate festival and decided that we were down to see what the VIP experience would offer.

We arrived to the festival grounds, as the rain was beginning. We were a little unsure when we presented our tickets to the guy behind the counter, because he seemed to not know about the VIP package. It turned out that we were the first ones to check-in for VIP, so they got us hooked-up and sent us into the festival. We made it backstage (beside the stage) and were made to feel pretty freakin’ important (Thanks Mark!). The rain only got harder as Gipsy Moon worked their way through the opening set with their incredible edgy bluegrass sound. The four-piece was not deterred by the downpour and continued to tear-up original numbers, including a couple of new tunes. One of the set highlights was the cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” with Mackenzie Page delivering stellar vocals.

Boulder’s own five-piece, Intuit, hit the tweener stage for a short set. To be honest, I spent most of their set, chatting with Gipsy Moon’s cellist, so though I could definitely hear it, I didn’t get to pay attention.

The night was set to close-out with Oregon’s very own post -apocalyptic marching band, MarchFouth!. They exploded out of the gate with pounding percussion and a tornado of horns. With music spanning several genres including funk, rock, jazz and ska, there was so much for the ears to process. However, MarchFourth! doesn’t stop there, they also overload the eyes, as well, with belly dancing, hula hoops and stilt walkers. In the middle of the set, they performed a super-sweet four song run, that began with the eastern influence of “Delhi Belly”. That was followed by “Cowbell” , which would probably be  Will Farrell’s favorite tune if he was familiar. A phenomenal cover of Paul Simon’s “Late In The Evening” was trailed by the funky dance vibe of “Get It On”. The band played until after ten and no one seemed to care that it was late when the festival closed for the day. I found out that for one of the dancers, it was her first night performing with the band, and the other was on her second night, but you never would have known it. One of the sax players was on his first night and he got a few opportunities to solo.

This was another wonderful day at Ned Fest and the music was a big part of that picture. Though yesterday was not a heavily attended day of the festival, the folks that did show up were certainly not left without being fully entertained. It was terrific and we are looking forward to day two with Hard Working Americans and Chris Robinson Brotherhood. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

17TH ANNUAL NED FEST HOSTS MARCH FOURTH!, CRACKER & More…

We are barely a week out from the 17th Annual Nederland Music & Arts Festival, lovingly referred to as Ned Fest. The very first Ned Fest happened in the late 90’s in someone’s yard and has evolved from there, hosting up to 2000 festivarians each day of the three day fest at the Jeff Guercio Memorial Baseball Field.  Having hosted acts as big and eclectic as Los Lobos, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, Dr. John, David Grisman and Robert Randolph & The Family Band, to name but a few, this intimate mountain festival is no slouch. The festival has also featured performances from acts that have grown exponentially since their time on the Ned Fest stage, such as Yonder Mountain String Band, The Motet, Elephant Revival and Keller Williams. Most years, attendee’s have enjoyed various off-shoot acts from local favorites, Leftover Salmon, Yonder Mountain String Band and The String Cheese Incident. Ned Fest has recently become a non-profit, with proceeds going to music education programs in the area.

This year’s Ned Fest, will feature four headliners that have never played at the festival before. Friday evening’s festivities begin with local jamgrass quartet, Gipsy Moon, who have quickly been making a name for themselves on the summer festival circuit. The first night’s music closes with the post-apocalyptic high school marching band sounds of MarchFourth!. I have seen this incredible conglomerate of horns, percussion, stilt-walkers, and uncontainable energy a couple of times, and it is a spectacle not to be missed.

Day Two will start with the roadside bar sounds of the Funky Tonk Heroes. The groove-grass stylings of Acoustics Anonymous lay track between bluegrass and electric jam, with the drums pounding the spikes all along the way. The Gasoline Lollipops take the festival through the late afternoon with their alt-country songs about hard-luck, love, death and liquor, which are often inter-connected themes. The early evening introduces the fest to its double-headliner, starting with the inconspicuous super-group of the Hard Working Americans. This band is made-up of singer/songwriter, Todd Snider, Widespread Panic bassist, Dave Schools, Chris Robinson Brotherhood guitarist, Neal Casal, keyboardist for Great American Taxi, Chad Staehly, Butch’s son and current Widespread Panic drummer, Duane Trucks, and singer/songwriter, Jesse Aycock, who plays guitar and lapsteel with this band. This sextet will bring their deeply rooted American sound to our deeply rooted American festival. Not to be outdone, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood will finish out Saturday’s performances, with the former Black Crowes frontman, heading the band that includes Hard Working Americans’ guitarist Neal Casal, who will be doing double duty that day. If you haven’t heard CRB, we must highly suggest checking-out their roots-rock sound that is steeped in 70’s era folk n’ groove music. Most of the band has spent time as members of Phil Lesh & Friends, which may be why some of their songs sound like they could have been on The Grateful Dead’s albums ‘Wake Of The Flood’ or ‘Go To Heaven’. Saturday is sure to be a high-class musical experience.

Sunday begins with a testament to the proceeds at work, featuring Colorado Bluegrass Music Society’s Young Pickers. This collection of local kids, provides an impressive exhibition for the Ned Fest crowd. Traditional  bluegrass quartet, Caribou Mountain Collective have graced the Ned Fest stage in the past and are back again for a mid-afternoon set. There is a bit of a homecoming feel to Vince Herman’s set, considering he lived in the area for quite a while, before moving to the Northwest in the last few year’s. Billed as Vince Herman & Friends, the possibilities are endless for the Leftover Salmon co-founder, as to who might join him on the Ned Fest stage. The Sunday headliner is the pre-apocalyptic alternative act, Cracker, who have been together about a quarter of a decade. Fronted by David Lowry and Johnny Hickman, the band had some alternative hits with songs like “Get Off This”, “Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now)” and “Low”. In 2003, Cracker released an album with the instrumental help of Leftover Salmon titled “Oh Cracker Where Art Thou?”, where they moved through some of Cracker’s biggest tunes. There is certainly some hope, but no evidence that there will be a re-visitation of the twelve year old album. It is sure to be an amazing weekend of music.

The Ned Fest line-up is a pretty good-looking list from beginning to end, this year. Besides all of the music we have shared with you, there are also tweener sets between each act, so the music is fairly seemless. There are also late night shows in town, so the music barely has to stop. We can’t recommend any festivals any more highly, than the 17th Annual Ned Festival. We have been attending for most of the last eight of the last ten years and always look forward to coming back to this family-friendly fest. There are still tickets and camping available, so what are you waiting for? We have added links to some of this year’s acts below. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

The list of shows around the area is not as long for the first week of March, as several of the weeks prior, but there is still some great music to hear along the Front Range. Now that winter is here, for real, you may have to be a little more picky about the shows you get out for, but still, get out!! That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

HAPPY LISTENING!!!! 😉

WINTER WONDER GRASS IN FEBRUARY 2015, LOOKS INCREDIBLE!!!!

Though the line-up was just announced for Winter Wonder Grass 2015 in Avon, the tickets have already gone on sale and unfortunately the locals three day passes are sold out. However there are other packages that have yet to be released, so I would definitely check-out the festival’s website to get further information, because you’ll want to get your ears filled with what the fest has in-store this year.

WINTER WONDER GRASS 2015 line-up:

  • Sam Bush Band
  • Leftover Salmon
  • The Infamous Stringdusters
  • Elephant Revival
  • Les Claypool’s Duo De Twang
  • Jeff Austin Band

Go to their site www.winterwondergrassfestival.com for more info. Enjoy!!
