WELL RENOWNED KEYBOARDIST, BERNIE WORRELL PASSES AT 72 :-(

As most music fans know by now, we lost the great Bernie Worrell a.k.a. ‘The Wizard Of Woo’, yesterday, at age 72. Worrell lost a short, but valiant fight with lung cancer and even managed to make it to a couple of events in his honor, in early April of this year. Bernie is best known as a founding member and keyboardist for Parliament Funkadelic, and also played with Talking Heads for a decade.

Worrell was born in New Jersey in 1944, and by the age of three, he had begun piano lessons. Before he was into double digits, he had already written his first concerto. He attended Julliard and received his degree from New England Conservatory Of Music in 1967. When he met George Clinton in the early 70s, George was in a doo wop group called The Parliaments, whose backing singers were referred to as The Funkadelics. A move to Detroit transformed the bands’ sound and their name into Parliament Funkadelic. Worrell played keys, but he was also, only the second recipient of the newly invented Moog synthesizer, in the 70s. Parliament Funkadelic took a touring hiatus in the early 1980s, and during that time he was recruited to work with a new wave band called Talking Heads. Though Bernie was never called a member of Talking Heads, he played with them for more than ten years, recording on ‘Stop Making Sense’ and touring with  the band for most of that time. When Talking Heads broke-up in 1991, Worrell recorded a great deal, with Bill Laswell. At the turn of the century, Bernie began to become a fixture on the jamband scene, performing with Les Claypool and Buckethead in Colonel Claypool’s Bucket Of Bernie Brains. Worrell continued to collaborate with an eclectic array of musicians on a myriad of projects, over the last fifteen years or so, including his own Bernie Worrell & The Woo Warriors. Besides his own Bernie Worrell Orchestra, the last several years saw him take the stage with artists as diverse as Bootsy Collins and Steve Kimock. In January of this year, Worrell was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer, which meant a move from the Northeast to the Northwest, among other things. Besides several complications from his illness, he was also honored in May, when The New England Conservatory Of Music, made Worrell an honorary Doctor Of Music. Bernie had recently returned home and his wife had urged his friends to see him as soon as possible, without saying exactly why. Bernie passed at home in Washington state, yesterday around noon, pacific time. Besides the phenomenal music he had a hand in making over the years and all the facts about his musical career, what I have read about him from those that knew him, leads me to believe he was an wonderful human being, as well. To see what I mean, look-up the emotional social media reactions from Les Claypool and Steve Kimock to Bernie’s death. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!!
