New Releases 6/10: ALLEN TOUSSAINT, BAND OF HORSES, GARBAGE & More…

This is the first full week of June, and though the list of new releases is less than the twenty I usually try to provide, I think there are some familiar names and some quality albums coming out this week. With a posthumous release, Allen Toussaint continues to contribute to the world with his amazing style of music. The best known artists with new releases this week, are Band Of Horses, Garbage, Shawn Colvin & Steve Earle and Nahko & Medicine For The People. This week’s list also includes albums from Colorado’s own, Grant Farm and Esme Patterson.

  • Allen Toussaint- “America Tunes”
  • Band Of Horses- “Why Are You O.K.?
  • Brandy Clark-  “A Big Day In A Small Town”
  • Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reed- “My Way Home”
  • Esme Peterson- “We Were Wild”
  • Frank Ballard- “El Rio”
  • Garbage- “Strange Little Birds”
  • Grant Farm- “Kiss The Ground”
  • Moon Hooch- “Red Sky”
  • Nahko & Medicine For The People- “HOKA”
  • Plaid- “The Digging Remedy”
  • Rage- The Devil Strikes Again”
  • Rival Sons- “Hollow Bones”
  • Shawn Colvin & Steve Earle- “Colvin & Earle)
  • The Shelters- “The Shelters”
  • Spring King-  “Tell Me If You Like To”
  • WOMPS- “Our Fertile Forever”

This is the list of new releases for the 10th of June, and though it is not quite as long as I might have liked, there are still some incredible albums coming out this week. I will pick one of these for a review, so check-in on Saturday to see which album I picked and to read what I heard. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

HAPPY LISTENING!!!! 😉

Review: BOHEMIAN NIGHTS AT NEW WEST FEST DAY 2

The second day of Fort Collins’ New West Fest saw mass crowds and very warm weather, not to mention some great musical performances. As usual, plans change and mine did in relation to some of the bands I had planned to catch, but I still got to hear some fantastic sounds throughtout the day on Saturday.

I started my day, by catching the last few tunes of Grant Sabin & The Full Moon’s stellar modern blues rock set, that included some scorching slide work. I passed by the Old Town Stage, where the Matt Skinner Band was performing their modern country sans a major vocal twang. I passed by a stage or two of music that just wasn’t doing it for me, until I landed at the Singer/Songwriter Stage to see about three songs of Shannon Fitzsimmons joined by Mary Sue Thompson finishing her set with some perfectly harmonized covers. The real treat of the early afternoon was Danny Shafer’s wonderfully melodic folk with some nice finger style guitar playing. I had seen Danny before, but never where I could really sit and listen, which I did for the entire set.

After a short break, I went back down to the fest and hit the Library Park Stage. I ended up setting up camp on the lawn there and stayed for three full sets, starting w/ Esme Patterson. Esme is a member of Paper Bird and was on guitar and vocals w/ just a drummer to make stripped down alternative music. It was good, maybe not what I’m listening to these days. Then it was time for the old-timey folkgrass of Elephant Revival, who drew a huge crowd. No matter which of the quintet were singing the vocals were impeccable as well as the harmonies. A couple of the stand-outs were “Rogue River” w/ Bonnie Mae on vocals and the clever fun of “Grace Of A Woman”. The Subdudes were up last on the Library Stage w/ an emotional set of music dedicated to Johnny Ray Allen, their original and current bassist who passed on Monday. They performed some songs that were specific to the loss including some songs by Johnny Ray. They started w/ “Couldn’t Take Another Heartbreak Now” and then added new bassist and long time affiliate w/ the band, Tim Cook on “Angel To Be”. The whole set was incredible but my favorites were “Got You On His Mind”, “Papa Dukie & The Mud People”, “Late At Night” and the set closer “Light In Your Eyes”. Not wanting to feel like a cow being herded and not being sold on Pat Benatar as a headliner I needed to see, I skipped the remainder of the festival.

There is plenty more great music to hear today, Day 3, so get on down to Bohemian Nights At New West Fest in Fort Collins. Enjoy!!

HAPPY LISTENING!!!! 😉
