Besides these well-known names, there are also some interesting new albums coming out from Angel Du$t, Car Seat Headrest, Black Pistol Fire, In Letter Form and Nick Moss Band. BOB DYLAN ANNOUNCES CONCERT AT RED ROCKS IN JULY!!

This summer’s concert line-up at Red Rocks Amphitheatre has been getting more impressive, by the week, and this week is no exception. As many of you already know, the legendary Bob Dylan will bring his band to the famed venue for a show on June 19. If it isn’t enough to see the man who has brought us so many amazing songs, such as “Just Like A Woman”, “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”, “Tangled Up In Blue”, “Like A Rolling Stone”, “All Along The Watchtower” and “When I Paint My Masterpiece”, then you will be happy to know that Mavis Staples will be opening the show. Mavis was a member of The Staples Singers and has had a tremendous solo career over the years, as well. The tickets for this show, go on sale this Friday, March 11.

There are other Red Rocks concerts going on sale this Friday, including Bad Company & Joe Walsh, Yonder Mountain String Band & Drive-By Truckers and Styx & The Colorado Symphony. Bad Company and Joe Walsh will bring their classic rock sounds to the venue on May 15, with Steve Rodgers opening. Colorado’s own Yonder Mountain String Band will team with southern rockers Drive-By Truckers and opening act, Preservation Hall Jazz Band for what promises to be an eclectic show, on August 20. Classic rock gets a spin on August 29 when Styx joins forces with The Colorado Symphony, at the historic amphitheatre. Though there have been lots of additions for the Red Rocks summer concert season, over the last several weeks, it is bound to slow to a trickle, considering how full the calendar is already. If you haven’t picked your Red Rocks shows for the season, it is time to get on it, before the best tickets are gone. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

HAPPY LISTENING!!!! 😉

New Releases 2/03: MURDER BY DEATH, JOHN CARPENTER & More…

For the first week of February, there are so many new releases, that I had to eliminate a few to keep the list under twenty. The new albums coming out on Tuesday, range from hip-hop to alternative and electronic to folk, and more.

  • Big Noble- “First Light”
  • Bob Dylan- “Shadows In The Night” (Frank Sinatra covers)
  • Butch Walker- “Afraid Of Ghosts”
  • Chill X Will- “Almighty”
  • H. Hawkline- “In The Pink Of Condition”
  • J. Tex & The Volunteers- “Old Ways Vs. New Days”
  • John Carpenter- “Lost Themes”
  • John Tejada- “Signs Under Test”
  • Lee Bannon- “Cope”
  • Matana Roberts- “Coin Coin Chapter Three: River Run Thee”
  • Murder By Death- “Big Dark Love”
  • Polly Gibbons- “Many Faces Of Love”
  • Shinies- “Nothing Like Something Happens Anywhere”
  • Shuko- “For The Love Of It”
  • Title Fight- “Hyperview”
  • Two Gallants- “We Are Undone”
  • Various Artists- “Britjam Flesh Riddim”
  • Various Artists- “Kingston 8 Riddim”
  • Victor Villarreal- “Sleep Talk”

These are the best of the new releases for this Tuesday, February 3. I am a big Bob Dylan fan, so I felt obligated to add his album to the list. Unless you are a big fan of Dylan’s voice, him singing Frank Sinatra, is probably not your bag. Otherwise, I will pick one of these albums to review and will post the review on Wednesday. Check-back on Wednesday, see what I picked and read the review. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!!

Album Review: VARIOUS ARTISTS “AN AMERICANA CHRISTMAS”

Though the list of new releases was pretty extensive this week, it was a hard choice to make as to which album I would review and not for the obvious reason. After several samples of this week’s new albums, I was only partially impressed by most of them. The best possibilities were Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness and “An American Christmas” by various artists. Though I’m not really ready to start listening to Christmas music, I couldn’t pass it up when I saw the variety of artists they had compiled for this album. With seasoned veterans like Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Dwight Yoakum, The Band and John Prine it was nearly impossible to pass it up, so I didn’t.

The album opens with some acoustic guitar and gourgeous female vocals on “Hark! The Angels Sing”. Luther Dickinson gets to some more elctric blues guitar that has a soulful balance with the horns.

John Prine does “Everything Is Cool” has a Jimmy Buffet feel, complete with some steel guitar. Though the song does make reference to “God’s gift, it doesn’t really seem to be a Christmas song.

Robert Ellis conjures his inner Randy Travis, but ultimately seems a little depressing, so it is not my favorite.

“The First Noel” is traditional and a cappella with Emmylou Harris leading other female voices through this angelic tune.

Johnny Cash performs “The Gift They Gave” is a nice slower tune that fits Johnny’s voice perfectly. It isn’t a traditional Christmas song, but I believe I have heard it a few times before.

“Just Me & These Ponies For Christmas” by Corb Lund is quite sad for a Christmas song, so I don’t plan on listening to this one much.

“Run Run Rudolph” really gets a country work-over by Dwight Yoakum, but probably not a stand-out.

Bob Dylan gets out his best polka pants for “Must Be Santa”. Probably the liveliest song I’ve ever heard Dylan perform, not to mention the song is just fun and even has some political satire.

Valerie June is a fairly fresh voice, but “Winter Wonderland” has both a fun twang and a sincere beauty under her watch.

“Everybody Deserves A Merry Christmas”by Ronnie Fauss is both comical and depressing at the same time. With lyrics like “it seems all them things we’re promised, like peace + harmony, they don’t apply when you’re doing time for B + E” it can’t help but be both.

Max Gomez does “Seasons Of Memory”, which is a pretty tune about better holidays passed.

Neil and Pegi Young join Ben Keith on “Les Trois Cloches”, which is a beautiful and sad song, but another tune that isn’t specifically about Christmas.

The Common Linnets perform “At Christmas Time” a lovely grown-up Christmas tune about a cherished love, gone away. Not as depressing as some of the other songs, which is helped by the steel guitar.

The lyrics are pretty awesome on ” Here It Is Christmas Time” by the Old 97’s, which finds the narrator asking for you for Christmas. It becomes more like a song a crowd at a pub would be raising their pints to.

What better way to end strong than to have The Band’s “Christmas Must Be Tonight” bring up the rear. Some really strong work by The Band, which was remastered back in 2001.

I have to be honest and express my confusion over the blurred lines between Americana music and country. I have a place for both types of music, but I am surprised that for an album entitled “An Americana Christmas” that there weren’t tunes by Wilco, Drive-By-Truckers, Blue Mountain, Hard- Working Americans, but rather songs by Dwight Yoakum and Robert Ellis. I also am not convinced that Christmas songs should ever be depressing by their very nature. That said, I love Bob Dylan’s song and was fond of a few others including Emmylou Harris, Valerie June, Johnny Cash and Luther Dickinson. None of the songs were bad, but maybe not all of them should have been on this compilation. I would probably not recommend the entire album, but rather specific songs. That’s What I Know So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!
