ANOTHER THURSDAY NIGHT IN FORT COLLINS WITH 3 GREAT BANDS!!

This Thursday night, the Aggie Theatre presents Pigeons Playing Ping Pong with Aqueous and Bill Smith at Hodi’s Half Note in Fort Fun.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong is a Baltimore-based psychedelic funk-jam quartet, that has been cultivating their sound for the last several years, all over the country. They have performed at several festivals from Strange Creek Campout and Peach Music Festival to The Big What? and Aura Music & Arts Festival. Their sound is much larger than four musicians often produce, while still keeping the quality high, so I have been listening anxiously to live recordings, waiting for these guys to come around again. Besides the Fort Collins show, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong are also playing at the Fox Theatre on Friday and at Cervantes’ Other Side in Denver on Saturday night.

Aqueous is based out of the Buffalo, NY area and are also a quartet, with a pretty impressive history so far. The band has brought its super-groovy jams to several well-known festivals along the eastern half of the country, including Moe.down, Disc Jam, Peach Music Festival and Mad Tea Party Jam, to name a few. I haven’t seen them live, yet, but have been listening to a lot of their live material, and have been nothing, if not completely impressed. These guys have only been together for around five years, but their cohesiveness speaks volumes about their skill level. Along with opening for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong in Fort Collins, they will be supporting them for the rest of the Colorado run, and beyond.

Fort Collins’ own funky improvisers, Bill Smith will be getting the crowd warmed-up on Thursday night at Hodi’s. These guys have been playing around the area for several years and will be a fantastic way to start a stellar evening.

The shows in Colorado come around the release, on Friday, of the latest album by Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, titled “Pleasure”. The Boulder show is the official release day, but hopefully they will be selling the album at all three venues. I could keep telling you how remarkable these acts are, but the proof is always in the pudding, so I have added video of each one to give you a real taste of the treat the Front Range is getting this week.

That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

New Releases 4/01: ANDREW BIRD, CHARLES BRADLEY, WEEZER & More…

Though last week’s list of new releases was pretty stacked, I had no idea how jam packed the list for the first day of April, would be. With the latest from Andrew Bird, Charles Bradley, Weezer, Marco Benevento, Explosions In The Sky, Greyhounds, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Elephant Revival, Mogwai and Pet Shop Boys, there is certainly no shortage of quality possibilities for this weeks review. On top of these, there is also the music of Miles Davis on the original motion picture soundtrack for “Miles Ahead” and a release from the archives of the Allman Brothers Band circa 1971, “Live From A&R Studios”.

Album Review: “PATCH THE SKY” IS THE NATURAL PROGRESSION FOR BOB MOULD!!

This week was one that I prefer, when the list of new releases is of such quality, that it is difficult to make a decision as to which one to review. There weren’t a bunch of big names, but there is big talent in the new albums from Khun Narin, Margo Price, Parker Millsap, Robin Trower and Joe Bonamassa. There was another artist that had a new release, that I have been listening to for almost 30 years, and so, after multiple samplings, I decided to review the latest offering from Bob Mould, titled “Patch The Sky”. I started listening to Bob when he was finishing his time with Husker Du and continued through his first few solo albums, believing firmly, that “Workbook” was easily one of the top albums of the 80’s. I picked up everything he released with Sugar, but kind of switched musical interests for many years, with a continued appreciation for Bob’s unmistakable sound, throwing on the old albums from time to time. This is the first time I have listened to new material from Bob, in many years, but I am excited to review his latest album.

A wash of fuzzy psychedelia starts the optimistically aware “Voices In My Head”. It feels a little like a Sugar tune, and has a depth that fixes what can be fixed and learns to live with the rest.

“The End Of Things” has a Husker Du edge, with a more adult take on the subject, even if the scenario leaves us cowering in the corners like little kids.

“Hold On” is a weighted number dealing with a broken relationship that you want to work, even when you know it can’t.

There is a nice balance of raw energy and refined expression on “You Say You”, with the sonic sound firmly intact.

The torment of the bass heavy “Losing Sleep” is only more pronounced under the pitch of Bob’s keys. This one has more of a modern indie rock feel.

Bob’s sonic side busts out on “Pray For Rain”, but never gets as down musically, as it does lyrically.

“Lucifer & God” seems to be rooted in Bob’s “Black Sheets Of Rain” era sound, and is an atomic battle between good and evil that gives it a melody with a heavy heart.

Heavy rock permeates the beginning of “Daddy’s Favorite”, but Bob’s vintage sound takes over and the raw energy of the Husker Du days, shines through.

“Hands Are Tied” is a punk rock ride on a new school freeway in a Formula one automobile, where everything looks like stripes of light going by.

Your ears are instantaneously drowned in an ocean of fuzzy chaos, while Bob’s voice gives shape to “Black Confetti”. Bob tears at his strings like he is trying to cut his way through dense brush and he is clearly winning the battle on this tune.

Some classic Bob Mould is in full effect on “Losing Time”, which sounds like an army of guitarists, that turns out to be just one.

“Monument” is a ballad with a distorted back-drop against the weight of a sunny disposition reflected in a broken mirror.

As a fan of Bob Mould’s, I am gratified that he still sounds as good as he ever has. “Patch The Sky” is a solid piece of music from the man who made sonic guitar the center piece of a post-punk trio, back in the day and set the table for so many to follow. Bob gives pure emotion to every track on “Patch The Sky”, which makes sense since he often writes about very personal experiences. There are definitely a few stand-outs, but all in all, Bob’s voice is crisp and clear, while his guitar sound is impervious to the years that have come before. If you are a fan of Bob’s previous works, then you will feel like the ride continues, but if you are into the Foo Fighters, this is most certainly a peek into the music that helped to influence their sound. Besides the new album, Bob is touring to support it and will be playing at the Boulder Theatre on May 7. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!
