There are many fantastic shows to catch and tons of amazing music to hear, to start off August. Between Red Rocks, Mishawaka Amphitheatre and the Denver Botanic Gardens there are more shows next week than anyone could possibly catch in seven days. With the Arise Music & Arts Festival coming in about two weeks, there will be tons of acts playing individual shows at some of the other venues along the Front Range. As usual, I have marked the shows I recommend with an * after the venue’s name, and there are a lot of them. For more extensive lists of coming shows and festivals, check-out the Coming Attractions and Festival Time pages. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

This week’s list of new releases was extensive on viable candidates for a review. I sampled all of the new albums that I had posted and was especially fond of those by Amy Helm, Elephant Revival, Joe Satriani and Warren Haynes feat. Railroad Earth. I also came close to choosing the compilation of artists for “Muddy Waters 100” featuring James Cotton, Derek Trucks, Keb’ Mo’, Gary Clark Jr. and the late, Johnny Winter. With my wife’s assistance, I decided upon the latest album from the Los Angeles-based American-roots octet, The Dustbowl Revival. This was only really, my second encounter with the band’s music. The first was the YouTube clip for “Never Had To Go” that had a starring role by the incomparable Dick Van Dyke. I had a feeling that I was in for something a little bit different, but only in the best possible ways.

The title track opens the album with its old-timey string music who’s edges are squared-off by the horns. From the sound of the lyrics Zach Lupetin is singing, the main character has a drinking problem that may cost him his woman.

“Hey Baby” has a little bit of a soul-swing to begin, but gets a beach-loving groove going. The call and response with the crowd helps to add energy to the song and shows-off some of their blues influences.

The traditional “Old Joe Clark”, starts off like a celtic fiddle tune before going to the country. The horns are subtle at first, but eventually get mixed in pretty evenly.

The soul-blues of “Feels Good”, introduces Liz Beebe on lead vocals. She sings with just the right amount of grit and is complimented well by the brass.

“Standing Next To Me” sounds like a classic soul duet, but surprisingly the mandolin and the fiddle, hardly sound out-of-place. The live vibe is infectious and makes the listener want to be there.

There is something Vaudeville meets the Squirrel Nut Zippers on the streets of  New Orleans on “Ballad Of The Bellhop”. It almost sounds like a swinging version of “My Blue Heaven” and even gets a little burlesque in the second half of the tune.  Lively, fun number!!

“Never Had To Go” is the song that I had seen the video for with Dick Van Dyke in it. Liz takes the lead vocals on this fast-paced jazz-grass tune.

“Bright Lights” takes the listener to Havana, by way of middle-eastern gypsy swing. There are plenty of builds and drops to keep the ears anticipating every note.

The Appalachian style fiddle tune “Cherokee Shuffle” is a little bit bluegrass, but mostly a mountain tune. The stomping and clapping with the live audience couldn’t make the live setting more inviting.

Liz takes the vocals and sings one of my favorite lines with, “if you keep turning me off, I ain’t never gonna turn you on” on “Doubling Down On You”. Has a burlesque club feel with the horns to accentuate the movements of hips and other parts. The crowd response is marvelous and it seems like a great tune with hilarious lyrics.

“Ain’t My Fault” is a direct flight to the Crescent City with a second-line style sound with Zach Lupetin on lead vocals, sounding a little down and out. The percussive break-down in the middle is stellar.

The swing of “Drop In The Bucket” becomes a tornado of strings and brass swirling all around your ears. This one could either be from the perspective of a person who has survived a long time with lots of diseases around or from the perspective of the disease.

“Wrapped Up In My Heart” is a blues number sang from the point-of-view of a lover whose woman has left him with nothing. There is some serious brass going on in this one.

The band goes more toward the Dixieland sound, complete with clarinet, on “Whiskey In The Well”. A great song about having second-thoughts about tossing the whiskey in order to repent for sins committed under its influence. A big bass solo works its way into this track and the whole thing rolls to the end of the album.

I really dig The Dustbowl Revival and their latest album “With A Lampshade On”. It is highly eclectic and full of American spirit. Our country’s roots are all on display within this one record. Though each style may not stand-out boldly by itself, this music is a weaving of all of it into one with some showing more in some places, than in others, but with everything being balanced perfectly, in just the right spots. I would suggest “With A Lampshade On” to anyone who likes bluegrass, blues, swing, Dixieland, soul and more. I can see this album appealing to children and even their great grandparents. I am adding a couple video links to truly give you the feel of what The Dustbowl Revival had to offer to your ears.
