This week’s new releases were full of good possibilities for an album review, but I was fairly set on one particular release before sampling any of the albums. Upon listening, there were some great pieces of music to choose from, but I did end up picking the album I had originally envisioned when I decided on “Beyond The Sun” by L.A.’s Orgone.

The opening cut is the soulful strut of “Don’t Push Your Luck”. Adryon De Leon tells the tale of not wanting to be tied down and not putting labels on things.

“Losin You” is a funky little number with an almost En Vogue vibe, especially with the background vocals.

Orgone gets a little more world-beat on “No Pain”, with Adryon delivering soulful vocals. It is kind of like Mary J. Blige in the studio with Zap Mama.

“Take You Higher” has a sexy soul vibe that reminds me of the early 80’s.

There is a funky little groove that calls attention to “Picture On The Wall”. Sergio Rios is subtle but stunning on guitar. After a nice build, Adryon rocks the vocals, which have the feel of someone talking about a higher power, but are vague enough, not to turn anyone off.

“When Someone’s Love Is Real” is a sassy soul-rock tune that leans a little more toward Alabama Shakes than anyone else I can think of.

“Interlude” is just a short instrumental piece that heads in the afro-beat direction.

“Meat Machine” has a funky afrobeat vibe, but also seems like it could have been from ‘Shaft’. I am so glad that they didn’t forget to throw in an instrumental or two on ‘Beyond The Sun’.

The 70’s disco-funk of “People Beyond The Sun” finds the horns getting some justly deserved attention. Easily, one of my favorite tracks on the album.

“Down, Down, Down” has more of that classic soul-funk sound, a little bit like Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings. I wasn’t a fan of this track right away, but by the third minute, I was down.

The soulful and strong nature of “I’m A Woman (I’m A Backbone)”, is where the organ finally gets to shine, at least a little.

“Sabi” ends the album with some serious afro-funk and minimal lyrics. The percussion and horns are stellar on this numer, especially the trumpet.

I have been a fan of Orgone for a few years and have listened to albums and have seen them live a few times. At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy “Beyond The Sun” as much as I had some of their earlier works. I am surprised, but happy that Adryon De Leon is now the lead singer for the band.  At least one of the times, I saw them, she was fronting the band and it was a truly impressive experience. It turns out that I was wrong, and the new album is quite amazing. It even has instrumentals, for those, like myself, afraid of total change.  I would suggest this for anyone who likes soul, funk or world music. I would also, strongly suggest that those closest to Denver, check-out Orgone when they headline one of the stages for Denver’s Day Of Rock over Memorial Day weekend!! That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

This is the list of the best of the live music to hear along the Front Range, next week. With Red Rocks hosting Primus, Gramatik and the Moody Blues and bands like The Orb and New Mastersounds in the area, many ears should be happy. Besides these, there are a lot of other great acts, both local and national, playing around. As usual, I have marked the shows I recommend with an * after the venue’s name. For more music happening in the coming months, check-out the Festival Time and Coming Attractions pages. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

Review: 2ND NIGHT FOCOMX 7!!

Though I am a little behind in writing this post and despite some trepidation over the crowds, I did go out for the second night of FoCoMX and caught a few acts in a couple of hours. I even dug two of the bands I saw that night.

I started the night around 9:15 at Compass Cider, which I have been curious about but had never been inside of. Nice place and a good vibe, but for the softer side of percussion delivered by More Than Physics, it perpetuated a fair amount of noise to drown out the beautiful music. I did hear a little bit and was truly soothed by and impressed with their earthy sound.

After other stops, I ended up at Hodi’s Half Note to see Wire Faces, which was not a band I had ever heard. The place was pretty full and remained that way during the trio’s set. With a lead singer on drums standing up and smack dab between the guitarist and bassist, from the first notes it was going to be something worth a listen. By the sound of their first song, they leaned toward bands like Jet and The Strokes. As their set continued, they started to incorporate something that was quite similar to the 80’s alternative punk of Fugazi. The band had great energy and the drummer really commanded the crowd.

After Wire Faces finished, I decided to call it a night and headed home. In general, i was a little disappointed that I didn’t see more of the awesome music there was to catch, but I did get to hear some live music that I hadn’t and would make an effort to see again. Hope everyone had fun at FoCoMX 7!! That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!!

Review; 1ST NIGHT FOCOMX 7!!

My intention for last night, was to hear a handful of musical acts @ FoCoMX 7, before calling it a night. I started with the Dead Jam House Band at Avogadro’s Number around 8:30. The crowd wasn’t huge to start but after a couple songs, including “Feel Like A Stranger” and “The Other One”, it built up pretty good on the back patio. The band tore into versions of “The Music Never Stopped”, “Estimated Prophet” and Shakedown Street”, which took them almost a half hour over their time-frame. Fortunately, they were the last band at Equinox, so no one was concerned. My plan from there, was to head to the Aggie to check-out Mama Lenny & The Remedy at 10. There was a line to get in and there was a jam-packed crowd inside. The music had already started and it sounded pretty good, but not totally inspired. The next couple of songs were a little more energetic and horn-fiilled with more passion. Despite that, I was not feeling the large crowds and when I got outside, it appeared that their were huge crowds everywhere. As I walked by other venues, I reminded myself that I don’t go out on homecoming, St. Patty’s Day, Halloween because of the same huge crowds, so I throw in the towel on the first night of FoCoMX 7.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to deter anyone from going and thoroughly enjoying FoCoMX 7, but it just isn’t probably my thing, eventhough I will try to drag myself out for the second night of this year’s event. Check-back tomorrow to read my review of today’s experiment. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!
