Though there weren’t as many new releases out on Tuesday as usual, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t anything good to check-out. After sampling all of the options, I decided on a musician I had never heard of before. Idris Elba is a London born and raised, actor, DJ, producer, singer and rapper. One of his most recent acting roles had him playing Nelson Mandela in “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom” which is why his latest album is titled “Mi Mandela”.

The opening track, “Aero Mathata” starts strong with a song performed in another language. It sounds like the world sounds of Deep Forest and Zap Mama. Even though I don’t know what the lyrics are saying, it sounds very positive.

“So Many People” has some African rhythms and mixes nicely with the soulful vocals and the optimism of the lyrics.

A subtle island sound with some soul love is the basis for “You Give Me Love” featuring Maverick Sabre.

“Thank You For Freedom” is a direct nod to Mandela and what he did for all of his people. Idris sings this call to show respect and gratitude to such a great man. The community feel with so many voices and horns, really puts things in perspective.

“One” is a conscious hip-hop track featuring George The Poet. Some of the words are decent, but not the best on the album.

Idris tells tales about playing Mandela in the appropriately titled “Mi Mandela”. It is a unique perspective about the humility of people who don’t always see their own greatness.

“Tree” features Audra Mae & Cody Chestnutt, performing a beautiful tribute to Mandela’s planting deep roots in his country.

Maverick Sabre appears again on “Home” with its world beats and singer/songwriter vibe.

“Nothemby Jam” takes a minute to get everyone settled into their roles, before they get a beautiful groove with some equally beautiful vocals. It slows, as the music drops out and then builds back up.

“Hold On” sees the re-appearance of George The Poet, as well as Thabo. This cut acknowledges the horror of the past while also acknowledging the brightness of the future.

The album finishes with “Soldiers Don’t Back Down”, which is a little more stripped down and in another language. The music is mostly traditional w/  African percussion and western flavor to bring it all together.

Idris Elba has put out a special piece of recorded history with an album as heartfelt as “Mi Mandela”. The central theme is also the man he recently played in “Mandela: Long Walk To Free” and the music that  has  been inspired by his time preparing for the role. At a time when there is so much civil unrest, it is amazing to think about how Mandela might have handled the situation. There is a pretty fantastic sound on this album that is very hopeful and melodic, and both of those are infectious. I would recommend this album to anyone into world music hybrids. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

1939- Annie Mae Bullock a.k.a. Tina Turner (singer; was married to and performed w/ Ike  Turner; “Proud Mary”, “River Deep & Mountain High”; solo artist; “Private Dancer”, “What’s Love Got To Do With It” + more…)            75 yrs.
