The choice of which new release to review was tougher than usual this week. Surprisingly, some of the artists I was expecting the most from were not the ones responsible for my dilemma. Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens have a soulful and spiritual new, old-school album, “Cold World” out on Dap Tone Records, which is the label of modern soul-stars Sharon Jones and Charles Bradley. I was fond of what I heard of Eric Clapton and Friends’ tribute to JJ Cale, “The Breeze”, which includes appearances by Mark Knopfler, John Mayer and Derek Trucks. The third album that made my choice difficult, was the latest album by William Close & The Earth Harp Collective entitled “Behind The Veil” and only based on the samples I heard, this was my choice.

The opening song is the title track, “Behind The Veil”, which starts a little like a slower Pink Floyd tune. The vocals could be Billy Idol or the lead singer w/ Devotchka, but either way, you can picture at least a slight snarl.

“Canon/With Or Without You” is an amazing cover of one of my favorite string pieces, “Pachelbel’s Canon”, with strings and some production to give it a millenial feel. It flows nicely into a version of U2’s “With Or Without You”. The female vocalist sounds good, but the song really takes off after the vocals, before melding back into “Pachelbel’s Canon”.

“The Great Superior” connects the sounds of both Devotchka and Dead Can Dance to create something haunting and beautiful. The string-work in this song is awesome.

One of the tracks that initially drew my attention, was the cover of The Who’s “Reign O’er Me” and it is still one of the best cuts on the album. The singing is superb, but it is the instrumentation that captivates the imagination on this track.

Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” is performed with strings and piano. It still sounds like the classical piece it has always been with more layers of sound to wade through.

“Arrival” is a little more of an alternative track than the others, with a vocalist that has that soothingly off-putting voice like Sarah MacLachlan. The strings are at the forefront for a good portion of the track and are phenomenal.

“Going Home” features a deeper woman’s voice accompanying something quite organic. The strings really stand out and the whole cut has a little bit of a celtic feel.

Unfortunately, “Mothership” is both the shortest song and my favorite song on the album. This track certainly showcases the magic of the strings.

“The First Ocean” features DJ Kraddy and has a very Dead Can Dance vibe, with a sense of precision that is almost exhausting. It has a psychedelic darkness about it, that is softened by the piano.

There is something very spacey about “Moving Between Worlds” that sounds like a symphony tuning on the moon.

... the aquatar the wing harp and the drumbrella to name a few video

After my first listen to William Close & The Earth Harp Collective’s new release “Behind The Veil”, I decided to do some research on this act I knew nothing about. William Close studied sculpture and sound design, and along with a fascination with architecture has incorporated all three into a music career. I found out that the Earth Harp is the largest stringed-instrument in the world, created by Close, that uses strings that stretch from the body, on stage, to points at the back of a theatre or opera house, where the architecture truly becomes part of the instrument. He plays these extra long strings with rosin covered gloves. The Earth Harp has a sound similar to the cello. Close has also developed around 100 other instruments including the Percussion Jacket, the Drumbrella and the Aquatar. This album isn’t going to strike a chord with everyone, but if you are a big fan of string music, more classical than bluegrass, and you like something different, then William Close & The Earth Harp Collective’s “Behind The Veil” might be a good fit for you. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!! Enjoy!!

I should start by saying that I only found out about this event 24 hours ago. It is 8:00 p.m. on Sunday night here in Colorado and the tickets for this three day run in March at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park go on sale tomorrow, July 28th at 10 a.m.

Colorado’s own polyethnic cajun slamgrass act Leftover Salmon will be playing an intimate trio of shows up at the Stanley Hotel, which was made famous by Stephen King’s ‘The Shining’. Fittingly, the first show will take place on Friday the 13th. There will be Leftover shows on Friday and Saturday night that will include bluegrass poster-boy, Sam Bush. They will play an acoustic set on Sunday afternoon. The band will be joined by Little Feat’s Bill Payne on keys for all three shows. There will be a matinee pick on Saturday and there will be other acts and activities that will be announced. This should be a memorable event for all attendees and musicians, alike.

Leftover Salmon also paidbush_1.jpg

The three day passes will be available for $150 for a short time and due to the limited capacity, get them quick!! Special room rates will also be available at The Stanley Hotel.

Get more information on Leftover Salmon’s site. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!!
