New Releases 6/03: BOB MOULD, CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH & More…

There is a really long list of decent albums coming out next week, so I was a little more picky than usual, to widdle it down to around twenty. Several of the artists have names that may seem somewhat familiar, due to their longevity in a business that doesn’t often allow it.

  • Big Smo- “Kuntry Livin”
  • Bob Mould- “Beauty & Ruin”
  • Camper Van Beethoven- “El Camino Real”
  • Clap Your Hands Say Yeah- “Only Run”
  • Dave & Phil Alvin- “Common Ground: Phil & Dave Alvin Play & Sing The Songs Of Big Bill Bronzy”
  • Echo & The Bunnymen- “Meteorites”
  • Hamilton Leithauser- “Black Hours”
  • Joe Henry- “Invisible Hour”
  • Lee Fields & The Expressions- “Emma Jean”
  • Matisyahu- “Akeda”
  • Meshell Ndegeocello- “Comet, Come To Me”
  • Mingo Fishtrap- “On Time”
  • Paul Weller- “More Modern Classics”
  • Peter Murphy- “Lion”
  • Rich Robinson- “The Ceaseless Sight”
  • Sage Francis- “Copper Gone”
  • Son Of Aurelius- “Under A Western Son”
  • Steve Oliver- “Best Of, So Far”

So these are the best of the best, as far as next weeks new releases go. It will be a difficult task to pick just one to review, so check back next Wednesday to read my review of one of these brand new releases. That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!!

Album Review: MOE. “NO GUTS, NO GLORY” 5/28

There was a deep selection of really good music to choose from this week, including at least a couple great hard rock/metal albums, however, I had already made my choice weeks ago. I picked the new release by the jam-rock quintet of Moe. and their new release “No Guts, No Glory”. I have been listening to Moe. for close to twenty years, but haven’t listened to new studio stuff for about ten years. The new album was originally intended to be an acoustic album, produced by hip-hop producer, Dave Aron, but it evolved in the studio to be something other.

The opening track “Annihilation” has more of a country blues intro, but turns into something that is part Moe. and part The Fall. It isn’t the Moe. I know, but it is a really well constructed tune.

“White Lighting Tupentine” starts with acoustic guitar, while the vibraphone takes it back to Moe. It becomes a southern blues number that keeps the rock edge with electrification.

There is a very thoughtful aspect to a song like “This I Know” about inevitable changes that we make happen or that happen to us. About the mid-point the boys take the song on a jammy excursion, complete with fuzzy guitar.

“Same Old Story” has a Weezer meets Smashmouth feel with clever lyrics and psych-rock organ.

“Silver Sun” is one of the longest songs on the album and seems to have a slight similarity to an older Moe. tune, “Water”. It starts with a groovy jam that lasts a few minutes before the lyrics kick in with a sound that is reminiscent of either early Pink Floyd or psychedelic Beatles, take your pick. A rockin’ jam ensues and even touches on the 70’s near the end. Certainly a stand-out on the new album.

There is a mid-90’s neo-alternative vibe about “Calyphornya”, which doesn’t hurt, but it doesn’t make this track the best of the new bunch either.

“Little Miss Empty Cup” has an intelligent Top 40 feel like older Barenaked Ladies if it was back in the 80’s. The reggae groove on the chorus, keeps this track light.

The horns at the beginning of “Blond Hair & Blue Eyes” are not typical Moe. fair, but work well on this song. It has a little bit of the southern flavor with some nice classic rock guitar.

“Do Or Die” is an Americana inspired hard-work pays off story. The percussion takes it off the mountain for a moment, but this is a solid tune throughout.

“The Pines & The Apple Trees” has one of my favorite lyrics, “can’t keep leaving, when you’re needing a home”. It has more of a jamgrass groove with the help of Al Schnier on mandolin.

The last track on the album is “Billy Goat”, which is the other long song on the new album. It gives a nod to a classic Moe. cut “Timmy Tucker” with some of the guitar work. Though the album is really well made, this cut is Moe. at their best. They also shine near the end when they are singing in a round. Great Track!!

Bonus Material on Deluxe Version:

“Hey O” is kind of a 70’s bubblegum number with Al on lead vocals. Not a bad song, but a little too sweet a Moe. for my tastes.

The world rhythms on “Mar De Ma” are awesome, but the tune is not long enough and should have been on the regular album.

“Runaway Overlude” is another bonus tune that would have been right at home on “No Guts, No Glory”. The opening music jogs memories of the Grateful Dead’s “Other One”. It slows down beautifully, like the Grateful Dead’s “Crazy Fingers” and then takes another turn into the “Other One” meeting Pink Floyd’s “Run Like Hell”. If the music wasn’t enough, the lyrics tell a fantastic story.

I’ll admit, I really wasn’t sure what to expect from a new album from Moe., that was originally supposed to be acoustic, but went rogue in the studio. “No Guts, No Glory” is probably one of the most well-carried out albums I have heard in quite awhile. I’m not saying it is my favorite album, but I believe that it is exactly the album that Moe. needed and wanted to make. Producer, Dave Aron certainly did a magnificent job of letting the band do what needed to be done and with Moe. a lot of that is done by the seat of their pants. I have to say that the title is fitting, considering that it took guts to make an album that was more stripped down, where bad playing and singing are harder to hide. The glory comes from putting out some incredible material and knowing you did. Pick up the deluxe version, it’s worth the extra two bucks. Enjoy!!

Moe will be playing up at The Mishawaka Amphitheatre on June 13th, but that show is Sold Out!! However, they are playing two sets at the LOHI Music Fest in Denver on June 14th with Pimps Of Joytime, Heavy Pets and more… That’s What I Know, So That’s What You Know!!
