Album Review: EUFORQUESTRA Puts Out “FIRE” !!!

Euforquestra is a world beat band that has always had a penchant for music dwelling on the funk side. They were originally from Iowa City, IA., but relocated to Fort Collins a few years ago. I was a fan from day one and also had a deep appreciation for their love of The Talking Heads, not to mention their ability to do stellar renditions of those songs. After having listened to Euforquestra for the last few, the band is changing direction with the addition of Kyle Hollingsworth in the production room for “Fire”. Kyle, is the keyboardist for The String Cheese Incident and is no stranger to the studio. I have a feeling that Kyle’s influence will have some affect on the music and I am eager to find out what and how much.

The album opens with “The Price Is Right”, which has an immediately infectious groove. Lyrically, it is a little elementary, but the chorus inspires the party vibe, with some 70’s funk flavor.

The title track starts with typical bar sounds (talking, glasses, etc.) with a slower funky horn-infused sound. There is something that whispers toward Deep Banana Blackout.

“Instant Coffee” featuring Kyle Hollingsworth on keys, is a fun funky instrumental. Kyle picks his moments, but doesn’t overshadow the music.

“Road Funk” is another funky tune with a sound that is a little Stevie Wonder, a little Michael Jackson and a lot of jam. Yeah, it’s still white guys singing, but white guys with soul. 😉

“Moment #1” is a dubbish interlude that lasts less than a minute.

The band goes back to its roots with the reggae vibe of “Solutions”. It is a positive story with an encouraging message. Elliot Martin guests on this track with a reggae rap, which isn’t necessary and actually throws the flow that is already solid.

“Wasted” begins with more of a mellow afrobeat groove. The music is still promoting the dance party concept, that is evident throughout the album.

There is something about “Free” that is more of a funky jam than pure funk. The lyrics are okay, but again the chorus makes up for anything the song is lacking. The guitar work is exceptional on this cut.

“Moment #2” is a soulful break with a little guitar.

“Take Me Dancing” features Kim Dawson (The Motet) on vocals. Kim has a great voice and the song has a disco feel about it.

“Momo Lolo” automatically made me think of The Meters “Hey Pocky Way”, with its New Orleans drum-line sound, Dixieland swing and some bayou boogie to round things out. This is an impressive instrumental and really is a stand out on the album.

Once the lyrics planted themselves in my ears, I got a big grin from “64-18”. It is a reggae-ish tune with a topic that hits home with carborated impact. It refers to Fort Collins ban on medical marijuana dispensaries within the city limits and then the big vote in November 2012 that got recreational marijuana legalized in Colorado. There is a little poke at opponents with the line “is funding your schools”.

“Moment #3” is another interlude with a psychedelic something.

“All The Light I Need” is an island song that has a little pinch of Jack Johnson tossed in. Slower love song for a beautiful coastal sunset.

Overall, “Fire” is a well-made piece of studio magic. The one difference is that Euforquestra seems to have become more of a funk band that throws world-beat influences in here and there. This isn’t necessarily bad or good, but it is different. The choice to have Kyle work on this album, seems to have been a good one. I think the guests were wise decisions, except for using Elliot Martin’s rap. Sometimes more is too much. I am looking forward to seeing them in Fort Collins @ Hodi’s on Friday 3/28. Enjoy!!
