Album Review: TWIN FORKS “TWIN FORKS”

After thinking about it for awhile, I decided not to listen to Beck or The Fray for this weeks review, but to go instead with the fairly unknown Twin Forks. Twin Forks is lead by singer/guitarist Chris Carrabba, who used to front Dashboard Confessional. He taught himself the traditional finger-picking technique for playing guitar over three years. He enlisted three other musicians and Twin Forks was born. They released an EP, which contains five of the twelve tracks from the new self-titled album, and are gearing up for a European tour next month.

“Can’t Be Broken” is stompy, melodic number that seems like the Lumineers playing with the Indigo Girls. It is an inspiring song about the strength of true love. I can already hear this one being overplayed on the radio. But I Liked It First!! ūüėČ

There is something eerily familiar about the whistling on “Cross My Mind”. Another catchy number with the beautiful sound of the mandolin permeating the layers. This is also a tune that I will probably hate hearing on the air, but will. Pretty great melody.

“Back To You” is a stompy track that has a little Blind Pilot mixed with some of The Head & The Heart. These folks do a hell of a job writing songs that are pleasant to the ears, even if they will become casualties of the airwaves.

Twin Forks get a little more new-grass with a nice, full low-end on “Kiss Me Darling”. This one may get huge on Top 40 radio, but more likely, fans of new country will like this one.

“Scraping Up The Pieces” is a terrific Irish pub tune that sounds like it came from Ireland. It is kind of like a Pogues tune with vocals that are a little more polished than Shane McGowan’s. It is fun, self deprecating¬† and it makes you want to sing along.

“Something We Just Know” has a vibe that is similar to Mumford & Sons. The music is light, while the lyrics are deeper.

“Danger” feels like it could have been performed by Shawn Mullins, except for the more indie sound behind. It is more of a driving number.

“Reasoned & Roughened” is a folkier track that has a Jeff Buckley mood, where less can be more. The lyrics are simple but clever.

“Plans” may be a country music cross-over cut. Has a little bit of a Zac Brown meets John Cowan sound.

Twin Forks hit on dark folk w/ a southwestern rock feel on “Done”.

“Come On” has the folk of Shawn Mullins and the light side of Brett Dennen. There is a nice balance of clapping, mandolin and fiddle on this track.

The last track on the album is “Who’s Looking Out”. The lyrics are easy to see and feel. It sounds like a little spite from someone who has been moved on from. It is a beautiful track from Twin Forks.

I can’t say I was a huge Dashboard Confessional fan, or that I can even name a track they did, but Chris Carrabba has got my attention now. This is not an album I will wear out, but there are some tracks that are very catchy and will get some decent play from me. The musicianship is superb and the songs are lighthearted with some lyrical depth, that is endearing. Another thing I can say, is that, intentional or not, they have some radio hits and I believe part of one song has already been used in a commercial. I would much rather hear Twin Forks than a lot of the music on the air these days, at least before, they too are over-played. Enjoy!!

HAPPY LISTENING!!!! ;-D
